Her first album 'Not the Tremblin' Kind' was recorded in 1999 and released by the Scottish label Spit & Polish Records. It received positive reviews, and John Peel praised the record as "my favorite record from the last ten years, and possibly my life." She also later recorded five 'Peel Sessions' with Peel. In 2000, the album was released in the U.S. by her husband's label 'Diesel Only Records', and again brought largely rave reviews and a strong surge in popularity for Cantrell as an artist.

Rolling Stone magazine called the album "an austere beauty." To promote her second album, 'When the Roses Bloom Again', she toured the States and Europe in 2002, providing support for Elvis Costello, who had personally chosen her for the occasion. Her last album to date, 'Humming By The Flowered Vine', was released in 2005 on the prestigious Matador Records label.

The album 'Kitty Wells Dresses': Songs Of The Queen Of Country Music' is dedicated to the unforgotten first US country star Kitty Wells, and was recorded in Nashville and New York respectively. It contains, of course, Wells' first big super hit from 1952 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels'.
