Carl & Pearl Butler: Crying My Heart Out Over You (CD)

1-CD with 8-page booklet, 12 tracks. Playing time approx. 33 mns.

In 1974 and again in 1975, the veteran country duo of Carl & Pearl Butler went to Nashville to record a set of traditional country songs, highlighted by a re-make of their own classic Don't Let Me Cross Over. This is hardcore uncompromising country with shades of bluegrass. The 13 titles also include Garden Of Shame, Precious Memories, If Teardrops Were Pennies and I Hope We Walk That Last Mile Together.

CRYING MY HEART OUT OVER YOU
When Carl Butler died in 1992, virtually none of his records were in print and younger fans remembered him vaguely only for his giant hit Don't Let Me Cross Over. Yet people who really knew something about classic honky-tonk and bluegrass, those fans who really listened to vocal styles and pure country songs, remembered Carl Butler as one of the finest singers of the genre.

They remembered his work in being the first to record classics like Linda Lou and I Wouldn't Change You If I Could and Honky Tonkitis; the first to merge the old-time mountain harmony with the newer drinkin' and cheatin' songs; one of the first to adopt Ray Price's shuffle beat to Nashville classics. Others recall that he and his wife Pearl were one of the first supporters of young Dolly Parton; that he was an early member of promoter Jim Denny's stable of artists, that he was a gifted songwriter, whose work was recorded by the likes of Roy Acuff, Rosemary Clooney, Carl Smith, and Bill Monroe.

Though his hit records could be fit onto one LP, Carl Butler was one of those artists whose work sold widely and steadily, and which gradually attracted a devoted and grateful following. He was a singer's singer, one who burned with a raw intensity, and who kept his 'edge' until the very end of his career.

Carl was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 2, 1927, and by 1939 he was playing country dances and starting to sing informally. Growing up he heard music from both directions: from Nashville, he heard the Grand Ole Opry, and their popular young singer Roy Acuff. He found it hard to escape the latter's influence, and soon he was phrasing and pitching his voice like Acuff's.

From the east, he heard the rich mountain sounds of the Knoxville stations, and later the pre-bluegrass sounds of the Tri-Cities area (Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City). It was the latter that attracted him first: after a stint in the war (serving in field hospital units in Italy, Germany, and Africa), he returned to take a job with the Bailey Brothers. In 1947 he made his recording debut with them, singing lead on their recording of John Henry. Soon after, he joined the Sauceman Brothers and showed he could sing what is now called bluegrass gospel.

By 1950 he was working as a soloist on Knoxville radio, and signed a contract with Capitol. His first attempts on the label were again in the bluegrass style, and featured back-up musicians like Speefy Kreise, Jake Tullock, and Tater Tate. But by 1951 he had moved to a sound more like that of the current rage, Lefty Frizzell: an electric guitar, a romping barroom piano, and steel.

One of his last Capitols was a song called I Need You So, that bore composer credits to 'Pearl Butler.' Carl had met his composer in Nashville, singing in school choirs and around the house, and listening to the Opry.

In 1952 Carl signed with Columbia, and for the two decades became one of the label's most steady and dependable performers. He continued to work around Knoxville, with side trip stints at Lexington and Raleigh, and to draw on the pool of talent associated with shows like `Mid-Day Merry Go Round,' ...
