“I Wish I Knew” was released in 1968. Solomon Burke struggled with the changing times, which in turn led to changing musical styles and sounds, so the first thought when listening to the LP might be to question some of the production decisions. Indeed, the album is sometimes a little more psychedelic than Burke's material deserves, but the performances within the grooves are still as solid as you would expect from an artist of his reputation.
The song you're probably already familiar with is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the title track “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free,” which made it onto the Hot 100. Other singles from the album included “Save It” and “Get Out of My Life, Woman.”
Although they have an unmistakable '68 sound, you can't go wrong with Solomon Burke.

Die königliche Haltung des in Philly geborenen Soulsängers Solomon Burke war so überzeugend, dass er 1964 von Baltimore deejay Rockin' Robin zum'King of Rock'n' Soul' gekrönt wurde. "Er hatte eine Show im Royal Theater und eine im Howard Theater. Eine Woche im Royal, eine Woche im Howard", sagt Solomon. "Er sagt: "Hör zu, ich will dich zum König krönen!" Ich sagte: "Okay, König von was?" Er sagt: "König des Felsens." Ich sagte: "Oh nein, wir brauchen eine Seele da drin, denn ich bin kein Rocker." Er sagt, "Okay, König von

Rock'n' Soul! Das wäre in Ordnung.'" Burke trägt immer noch eine Krone und sitzt auf einem Thron auf der Bühne.

Einer der Herren, die für Burkes frühen 60er-Jahre-Hit-Streifen auf dem Atlantik verantwortlich waren, war Bert Berns, dessen Schriftzug Twist And Shout, Hang On Sloopy und Piece Of My Heart zierte. "Bert Berns war ein guter Freund von Jerry Wexler", sagt Burke. "Bert Berns war ein junger Schriftsteller, der nach New York kam, und niemand würde eines seiner Lieder machen. Also hat Jerry Wexler ihn adoptiert. Er wurde wie Jerrys Adoptivsohn. Und er war einfach da im Studio. Und Jerry sagt: "Hör zu, du musst ein paar dieser Lieder singen." Berns schrieb Burkes Hit Cry To Me aus dem Jahr 1962, schrieb seinen Top-Verkäufer Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye) und teilte sich die Lorbeeren mit Wexler und Burke über das Stampfen von Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, ein weiteres Highlight von Solomon aus dem Jahr 1964.

"Ich musste ihnen ein Stück von den Autoren geben, bevor sie es akzeptieren würden, um die Platte überhaupt zu veröffentlichen", sagt Burke. "Sie sagten: "Dieses Lied wird nie geschehen." Es ist zu schnell. Es ist überflüssig. Es sagt immer dasselbe. Niemand wird das kaufen!'"

Solomons Fans kauften nicht nur diesen, sie entschieden sich auch für seine glänzende, selbst geschriebene Ballade The Price, eine #57 Pop-Verkäuferin. Im vollen Wonder Boy Preacher-Modus während einer Predigt, in der er drei Hits der letzten Zeit namentlich überprüft, erzählt Burke leidenschaftlich, wie viel ihn seine gebrochene Liebesaffäre vor einem messerscharfen Ray Ellis-Arrangement gekostet hat (Berns selbst war einer von drei Gitarristen an diesem Tag).

"Es wurde im Apollo-Theater geschrieben", sagt Solomon. "Eine Dame fiel fast vom Balkon, schrie und schrie, als ich das Lied auf der Bühne schrieb. Ich hatte zu dieser Zeit einige persönliche Probleme in meinem Leben mit meiner Frau, und ich kam einfach auf die Bühne und ließ meine Band bestimmte Akkorde spielen. Ich spielte Gitarre, und sie folgten mir und ich schrieb den Song. Es war sehr dynamisch."
