Booker T und die MGs. Booker T Jones, geboren am 11. Dezember 1944 in Memphis, Multi-Instrumentalist, vor allem Keyboard, und die Memphis Group - Steve Cropper (geboren am 21. Oktober 1941) Gitarre, ursprünglich Louis Steinberg am Bass, später ersetzt durch Donald 'Duck' Dunn (geboren am 24. November 1941), Al Jackson (geboren am 17. November 1945) Schlagzeug - waren zehn Jahre lang der Kern der Hausband von Stax Records - der Eckpfeiler des Unternehmens, sein Klang und sein Erfolg.

Ursprünglich die Rhythmusgruppe der Mar-Keys, wurden die vier Männer bei einer improvisierten Session ohne Hörner aufgenommen, was zu Green Onions" führte, einem bluesigen Orgelriff, das von Croppers rasiermesserscharfen Tönen durchzogen wurde und auf einer einfachen, aber überzeugenden Bass- und Drumlinie reitet. Sie wurde auf der neuen Tochtergesellschaft Volt ausgegeben, auf das Mutterlabel Stax übertragen und von Atlantic im August 1962 auf eine Million Verkäufe verteilt. Viel enger als die durchschnittliche kleine R&B-Combo, war ihr ökonomisches und ausdrucksstarkes Zusammenspiel von Ideen bei launischen, kleinstündigen Blues- oder hart fahrenden Dance-Songs wirksam, In über einem Dutzend Alben und zwanzig weiteren Singles, darunter Bootleg" (1965), Hip Hug-Her", Groovin" (1967), Soul Limbo" (1968) und Time Is Tight" (1969) von ihrem Soundtrack bis zum Film Uptight". Noch beeindruckender war ihr Beitrag zu fast jedem Hit, der in den sechziger Jahren in den Stax-Studios entstand.

Sie unterstützten nicht nur die eigenen Stars, sondern gaben auch anderen atlantischen Künstlern die konsequenteste Antwort auf den Motown Sound. 1971, müde vom Druck in einem Unternehmen, das längst aus seinen intimen Anfängen herausgewachsen war, entkam Booker T mit seiner Frau Priscilla Coolidge an der Westküste einer neuen Karriere; Dunn blieb in Memphis; Cropper ist ein umherziehender Schriftsteller / Produzent und Sessionman geworden. Jackson blieb bis zu seinem Tod 1975 ein führender Session-Drummer.
