Jonas ”Mr R&B” Bernholm is the man who, for a couple of decades, starting in the mid-1970s, put Rhythm & Blues of the late 1940s and 1950s back on the map. He re-issued many of the best recordings, with the greatest African-American R&B-artists, on 190 LPs. Thanks to Jonas Bernholm and his talent scouts and assistants, many top Rhythm & Blues artists were rediscovered and given a second chance; Like Roy, Charles and Ruth Brown, Rosco Gordon and Nappy Brown while others were given a tribute after outstanding careers like Amos Milburn, Billy Wright, Jack McVea and Joe and Jimmy Liggins etc. This is the story of Jonas Bernholm and his record companies.

Jonas Bernholm is a Swedish researcher, writer, and record label owner (also known as “Mr. R&B”) who made it his life’s ambition to document the rhythm and blues scene in the United States during the 1960s. He has been instrumental in sharing blues music via a number of record labels he has started since 1976, including Route 66, Mr R&B, Stockholm, Bluesboy, Crown Prince, Saxophonograph, Jukebox Lil, Gospel Jubilee, Earth Angel, Dr Horse, Clanka Lanka, Gospel Treasures (CD’s), Jazz Information, Gamla Skivbekanta, Whiskey, Women, And….
An avid record collector, Bernholm’s 26,000 LPs, 45s and 78s and artist correspondence have been on display at The Smithsonian Institute since 1996. In 2013 a documentary on his career was featured for four months at The Stax Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. On January 16, 2018, Jonas was awarded with the ”Keeping The Blues Alive Award” in Memphis. The jury wrote: ”Jonas Bernholm, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, has been instrumental in sharing blues music”.
