Eddie Bond: Talking Off The Wall! (LP & CD, 10inch, 45rpm)
- A rocking 14-track LP on Bear Family Records® from one of the original Memphis rockabillies, Eddie Bond, backed up by a 25-track CD featuring original and cover versions of some of Eddie's songs.
- Mostly from the mid-1950s, these tracks sparkle with the life and excitement of the new rocking music.
- Eddie started and finished as a country singer, but he embraced the new rockabilly music and he soon became the Rockin' Daddy described in his best-selling disc from 1956.
- Eddie's backing bands include two of the best guitarists of all time – Reggie Young and Hank Garland – and they don't disappoint.
- The ten-inch LP contains one song from Eddie's first label, Ekko, six from his rockabilly heyday on Mercury, two from his originally unissued sessions at Sun in 1958, and five tracks from local Memphis labels in the 1960s.
- The bonus CD contains also a further 11 tracks by other artists, providing fascinating other versions of songs Eddie recorded. Artists include Sonny Fisher, Lattie Moore, Ray Charles, and Elvis Presley.

Eddie Bond
EDDIE BOND has never quite picked up the record company veneer. Sitting in his Memphis office, or an English pub, he still looks like the sort of heavy Southern lawman who'd bang you up for dropping a sweet wrapper. Eddie James Bond learned to rock in Memphis where he was born on July 1, 1933. He grew up with country music acquiring a taste for Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb. After a stint in the Navy, he formed his first band, the Stompers, during the early '50s choosing Reggie Young (lead guitar), John Hughey (steel guitar) and a blind pianist, Jimmy Smith. They were rejected by Sam Phillips who thought Bond's voice lacked character. In 1955 Bond made a couple of country records for Ekko and it's likely that these brought him to the attention of D.Kilpatrick who signed him to Mercury in 1956. We've chosen Rockin' Daddy (a cover of Sonny Fisher's Starday classic), Flip Flop Mama (a Bond original), Boppin' Bonnie (written by Charlie Feathers's associates, Jody Chastain and Jerry Huffman), and Slip, Slip, Slippin' In from the pen of Bob Belyeu who wrote Honey Stop for Faron Young and Lonesome Train for Johnny T. Talley. Belyeu's song was also recorded by Lou Millet, a C&W singer turned rockabilly whose ferocious version on the Republic label has been valued at $1000 plus. All four of Bond's tracks are blessed with the definitive hot rockabilly guitar playing of Reggie Young who competes with John Hughey's steel on Rockin' Daddy, contributes two sizzling breaks to the other titles and more than compensates for the characterless nature of Bond's voice. Scotty Moore referred to Young's prowess in an interview with Trevor Cajiao: "Reggie was playing real good and then he went into the army, and when he came out...Lord ! He was scalding! Just had a lot of time to practice I reckon". Sam Phillips turned Bond down again in 1958 but eventually relented. Bond's career took other surprising twists and turns. In 1973 he devoted an album to Buford Pusser, Tennessee's rugged symbol of law enforcement whose harrowing story was told in the movie,'Walking Tall'. Eventually, Bond became one of the rockabilly glitterati, feted in Britain and the rest of Europe. His Ekko, Mercury and Sun/Phillips International recordings have been gathered up on 'Rockin' Daddy' (Bear Family BCD 15708).

Super sound quality, beautiful images of the original labels and proper researched information about the artists and their recording sessions
I always thought that Eddie Bond is great, but I was never able to buy everything and all. That's why I‘d always bought any other record instead for 40 years. Shame on me. Sure, I’d heard most of Eddie‘s titles and I have one or the other track on a compilation. I always thought, "I'm going to buy Eddie Bond tomorrow." Finally here‘s tomorrow and I have taken this great 45rpm 10" record from Bear Family as a starter to Eddie Bond. I can only say, it’s very, very awesome. Only killers – no fillers! I would say thematically, this disc contains the songs that are the most popular with the Rockabilly community – and there are not only tracks from the 50s – plus some other very interesting and important titles by Eddie Bond.
I’m always impressed by the high-quality presentation of Bear Family products. A large booklet and a great photo are included with this record. There is super sound quality, beautiful images of the original labels and proper researched information about the artists and their recording sessions – as usual with Bear Family.

The Bond 10 inch LP turned out really well!
The Bond 10 inch LP turned out really well I think, sound and sleeve and booklet!
... from Ding Dong Tennessee ...
The rockin' daddy from ding dong Tennessee gets a worthy reappraisal on this 14-track 10" that delivers
choice cuts from his back catalogue and a host of other extras.
A great illustration of these early years from Memphis rocker Eddie Bond!
A small package, but one that's overflowing with gems – given that the 10" album includes 14 titles, and the bonus CD features a total of 25 numbers in all – a great illustration of these early years from Memphis rocker Eddie Bond! Bond's maybe best known for his work on Sun Records, but he also recorded for other small labels too – and this set brings together a good range of those cuts in a nicely short space – including a few surprises from the late 60s that show that the Memphis rockabilly of Bond is alive and well!
fantastic release
This beautiful package contains a 14-track 10" vinyl LP, a CD and a 12-page booklet with notes by Memphis specialist, Martin Hawkins.
Concentrating on the 10inch we get one song from Eddie's first label, Ekko, six of his rockabilly monsters from Mercury, two from his originally unissued 1958 Sun sessions, and five tracks from local Memphis labels in the '60s. The songs themselves need no intro-duction here, suffice to say they are the very zenith of rockabilly music - the Mercury recordings, in particular, holding their own against anyone else's best.
I was particularly pleased to see the great honky-tonker 'Runnin' Drunk' included and although it was cut at Sam's Madison Avenue studio as late as '68, it slots in here perfectly -it's all Memphis music after all. I also loved hearing 'Here Comes That Train'. I've heard it hundreds of times on CD but the acoustic guitar and dobro sound so grand on this vinyl, sitting beautifully between `Rockin' Daddy' and `Boppin' Bonnie'. The Bond and Jack Clement song, 'Broke My Guitar' (Boo Bop Da Caa Caa)', and the Quinton Claunch and William Cantrell number, This Old Heart Of Mine, come from '58 and although neither saw release at the time, they have all the markings of Sun Records.
1969's Nashville recording, 'Juke Joint Johnny', maybe shows yh its vintage and doesn't sit so wells E in the collection, but it still rocks. The CD contains a further eleven tracks by other artists including Lattie Moore, Red Sovine, Hank Penny, Lou Millet, Ray Charles, Elvis and two vicious interpretations of •Rockin' Daddy' by Sonny Fisher. The shiny includes two alternatives by Eddie himself; a 1975 version of `Rockin' Daddy', and his 1959 Stompertime version of 'Boo Bop Da Caa Caa'. The great Memphis cat Eddie Bond was probably due a vinyl update, making this a fantastic release
