Big Creek Slim: Migration Blues (CD)

(Straight Shooter) 12 tracks, digisleeve

Otherworldly. That's an apt description for the music of Big Creek Slim. Big Creek lives in the 21st century, here with the rest of us, but his country blues comes from another place and time - namely, the deep American South before World War II.

His musical pedigree includes Son House, Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, to name a few. Still, Big Creek is his own man. He writes his own songs, including all 14 solo tracks here. He is absolutely fluent in the language of this genre of music. His vocals reverberate, even in the quietest moments. His fingerstyle guitar arrangements reveal a man immersed in this music. There is not a wrong moment to find. Listen to it, and you'll believe it. Still, Big Creek writes and sings in the present and grapples with modern issues.

In tracks like "Deportation Blues" and "Hard Times," he gives vent to his frustration when, he says, "I applied for family reunification with the rather hostile Danish government. This made me a second-class citizen in my own country, trying to please the system, the landlord and my wife. No surprise - I didn't succeed!" Enough to give a man the blues, no doubt.
