On his eclectic fourth album, acclaimed songwriter and visual artist Terry Allen reflects on kinship - on the ways sex and violence weave and sever the bonds of family, faith and society - with pointed satire and affection in equal measure.

Bloodliness assembles thematically related but disparate recordings from a variety of theatrical and historical sources: two songs written for plays; two reprises of excerpts from Juarez with a full band cast; the gruff hellfire hitchhiker-on-the-highway ballad Gimme a Ride to Heaven Boy (with Joe Ely); and the poignant eponymous ode to the arteries of ancestry and landscape (the debut recording of eight-year-old Natalie Maines, later covered by Lucinda Williams).

This first reissue, remastered from the original analog tapes, includes a gatefold jacket and inner sleeve with restored, new and alternate artwork and photos of Allen and friends, plus an insert with lyrics and original notes. "No veteran country songwriter is better attuned to the national mood.

TERRY ALLEN & THE PANHANDLE MYSTERY BAND

Singer/songwriter/pianist born in Lubbock, Texas in 1943. His debut album, 'Juarez', was released on the Fate label in 1976.

Album recorded July-August 1980 at Caldwell Studios, Lubbock, Texas. All songs are by Allen except this one – probably the most unusual version ever of this Berry classic. It starts off with a self-composed ditty, 'Whatever happened to Jesus and where did that good ole boy go?' (plus a few more lines), followed by 'Whatever happened to Mary? Whatever happened to her sweet dreams? Did she leave them behind with her childhood or just trade 'em in on a tube of Maybelline? Ahhh, Maybellene why can't you be true...' and so on. I like that. Allen really did make his own unique version of the song without copying anyone else!
