This 25th anniversary expanded edition includes five previously unreleased tracks recorded live at Mountain Stage on November 14, 1999. Kelly Willis built a strong fan base during her performances in Austin, Texas, in the late 1980s. Her fans included other Texas musicians such as Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith. Griffith introduced her to producer Tony Brown, who signed Willis to MCA Records. Soon after, she appeared in the films Thelma & Louise and Bob Roberts and was nominated for Best New Female Vocalist at the 1993 Academy of Country Music Awards. After three albums on MCA and an EP on A&M, Willis completed her fifth release and signed with Rykodisc, where What I Deserve was released in 1999. Featuring originals by Willis, three co-writes with Gary Louris of The Jayhawks and songs by Paul Kelly, Paul Westerberg, Nick Drake, Dan Penn and others, “What I Deserve” became her highest-charting album to date, reaching #30 on the country charts and #24 on the Heatseekers Albums. It is also revered today as a milestone in alternative country and Americana circles - and for good reason. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, “What I Deserve” returns - expanded to include five previously unreleased live performances of songs from the album recorded on November 14, 1999 at Mountain Stage.
