Fats Waller was the 'Clown Prince' of Jazz. His highly successful career was based on his ebullient personality and breath-taking techniques for playing and composition - which gave a sense of complete 'rightness to almost everything he produced. His genius was largely devoted to inventing musical essays on the theme of 'having a good time.- tempered with warnings of the pitfalls of love and matrimonyfdrawn from a vast personal experience!). Apart from his part in the composition of Black and Blue - he produced very little of 'social significance' - which perhaps explains why he was (and still is) so widely loved as an entertainer.
