The story began in 1939 when the Montgomery Ward retail store chain wanted to give away a story book to its customers at Christmas, and assigned the job to Robert L. May. Ten years later, May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, wrote a song about May's creation, and it was an instantaneous smash. Perhaps the last great Christmas classic!
