In 1956 and '57, the company signed talented young rockabilly musicians such as Rick Carter, Billy Brown, the Night Hawks and Chuck Atha.
A still unknown Jerry Reed was involved in almost all sessions as a style-defining guitarist, giving these recordings a unique stamp of quality.

Bill Lowery was the man when it came to Atlanta’s 1950s music scene. The dynamic Louisiana native began working as a deejay when he was 16, progressing to managing a radio station at 21 before settling in Atlanta in 1946.

Lowery wore many hats after that as a top-rated deejay, a gig as ‘Uncle Ebenezer Brown’ on a Saturday morning country music program, and heading his own highly successful publishing firm, Lowery Music Company (Be-Bop-A-Lula and Young Love were two of his company’s early successes).

In 1955, Bill launched his first record label, Stars, Inc. - the focus of this revelatory collection. Rockabilly was raging, and Lowery nailed down some top-flight local talent in the genre for his fledgling diskery.

Even though he didn’t have a Stars, Inc. single of his own, Jerry Reed contributes mightily to this set, writing and playing sizzling guitar on separate versions of Ooh-eee (What You Do To Me) by Chuck Atha and Ric Cartey and peeling off bluesy lead licks on The Rockateers’ two-part instrumental Rock Bottom (Reed was the writer there too).

Cleve Warnock’s My Baby Is Gone and The Night Hawks’ You’re My Baby are snarling rockabilly, while Did We Have A Party by Billy Brown rocks like crazy.

Kenny Lee’s eerie Song Of The Singing Wind and Danny Welch’s Riding Shotgun (In A Hot Rod Car) careen over minor-key grooves, Billy Barton’s Ten Wheels is a rollicking truck driver’s lament, and 11-year-old Judy Tolbert sounds like worthy competition to Brenda Lee on I’m Wise To You Baby.

Stars, Inc. only existed to the close of 1957, but Lowery obviously knew what he was doing - as he proved anew at his next Atlanta-headquartered label, NRC Records.

Ooh – eee!

„Ooh – eee! What you do to me?-----. Rockers and Country Boppers from Atlanta, Georgia, beschäftigt sich mit dem aus Altlanta, Georgia stammenden STARS (INC) Label. Das Label, das lediglich in den Jahren 1956 und 1957 aktiv war und nur eine recht geringe Anzahl von Veröffentlichungen vorweisen kann, zählt sicherlich nicht zu den legendärsten oder bedeutendsten Schallplattenfirmen seiner Zeit. Erheblich bedeutender und bekannter als das Label selbst, ist und war jedoch sein Betreiber Bill Lowery.

Es dürfte wohl keine, noch so spärlich ausfallende Rock´n´Roll und Country Sammlung existieren, bei der man nicht früher oder später auf den Namen Lowery stolpert. Bill´s „LOWERY MUSIC" Verlag hatte Aufnahmen von Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, Dion, Everly Brothers, Percy Sledge und und und im Katalog.

Nach dem Ende von STARS gründete Lowery die National Recording Corporation. Eine Firma, die sowohl Aufnahmestudio, Presswerk, eigenes Label und nationalen Vertrieb von Platten unter einem Dach vereinte. JUDD Records, ein Label das er von Sam Phillips Bruder Jud Phillips übernahm und Scotty records, sind nur zwei weitere Label, die von Bill Lowery geleitet wurden.

Doch kommen wir zurück zu den hier nun vorliegenden 12 Aufnahmen, die für das STARS INC Label eingespielten wurden. Bei einem Blick auf die Titelliste des Album, stolperte ich zunächst einmal über die drei mir bekanntesten Songs und Interpreten.

Aufgrund der „Verschüttung" meines eigentlich vorhandenen Wissens über das Stars Label (auch ich werde alt und vergesslich), verortete ich Ric Cartey ganz spontan mit RCA, Bill Brown mit Columbia Records und Billy Barton mit Abbott und King.

Tatsächlich erschienen Ric Cartey´s „ Oooh-Eee" und Bill Brown´s Kracher „Did we have a party" aber zunächst auf STARS, ehe sie kurze Zeit später an RCA, bzw. Columbia lizensiert wurden. Der großartige Country Bopper „Ten Wheels" von Billy Barton, der mir bislang lediglich von der Desperate Rock´n´Roll Vol. 22 bekannt war, erschein seinerzeit aber tatsächlich ausschließlich auf STARS.

Chuck Atha´s version des Titelsongs Ooo-Eee gefällt mir persönlich noch ein klein wenig mehr, als die ebenfalls hier vorhanden Version von Ric Cartey. Aber das ist natürlich eine reine geschmacksfrage, die einige von euch für sich genau anders herum bewerten werden, Anyway, beide Versionen machen Spaß und sind mehr als nur hörenswert.

Der Song stammt im übrigen von keinem der beiden genannten Künstler, sondern wurde vielmehr von Jerry Reed geschrieben. Reed, der später unter seinem Namen auch für Bill Lowerys NRC Records eigene Aufnahmen veröffentlichte, fungiert bei einigen der auf diesem Bear Family Album vorhandenen Songs als Begleitmusiker (Passend zum Thema, werde ich in noch folgenden Plattenvorstellungen auch auf die noch erhältlichen 10" Alben von Ric Cartey und Jerry Reed eingehen)-

Als gerade zu „spookey" würde ich die „Ähnlichkeit" von Judy Tolbert´s „I´m wise to you now" zu den frühen, rockenden Aufnahmen der jungen Brenda Lee bezeichnen. Der klasse Song war mir von keiner Wiederveröffentlich auf Vinyl bekannt. (Menschen, die sich auch für diese kleinen silbernen Kunststoffscheiben interessieren, mögen den Song von einer Buffalo Bop CD her kennen).

Eine Vinyl Wiederveröffentlichung des sehr interessanten „Song of the singing wind" von Kenny Lee ist mir ebenfalls nicht bekannt, so dass ich ihn hier erstmalig genießen konnte.

Cleve Warnock und sein extrem cooles „A boy and a guitar" (Corn Fed Vol.7) und das urwüchsige und aufregende „You´re my Baby" von The Nighthaws (WLP 8836) befinden sich zwar vielleicht schon in eurer Sammlung, kommen aber hier auf diesem „Themenalbum" noch einmal besonders gut zur Geltung.

Ein fantastisches Album, das von der ersten bis zur letzten Sekunde einfach nur hochinteressant wirkt und sehr viel Spaß macht.

Beschenkt euch selbst zum Feiertag des 2. Mai. Bin mir mehr als sicher, dass dieses, auf 500 Exemplare limitierte 10" Album zum ersten Mai des nächsten Jahres nirgendwo mehr erhältlich sein wird.

Ginge es nach mir, wäre das Album bereits morgen (mit voller Berechtigung) vergriffen. Da ich ein Exemplar mein Eigen nennen darf, könnte mir das eigentlich egal sein. Für jeden anderen interessierten würde es mir aber aufrichtig leid tun!
