Various: Everybody's Boppin' - Early Northwest Rockers & Instrumentals Vol.1 (LP)

(2002/Norton Records) 18 Tracks -

Hang in with us over the course of the next three albums and you'll be treated to a well rattled earful of the Pacific Northwest's coolest early rockers and instrumen-tals. We'll jump from the five star rockabilly perfection of Bobby Wayne and Benny Cliff to the cranked up garage rev-elry of the Vikings and Tornados. Kent Morrill of the Fabulous Wailers points out that in the early days, 'the Northwest was like the wild west'.

The post-Elvis record biz scene in the isolated Pacific Northwest unfolded with pockets of activity in and around the major cities. Bandstand action in the clubs, armories and hops was fierce and ferocious, but it was an uphill battle just to break a regional single, much less attract the attention of the entire country. On one hand the opportunities for a national break-out were fewer, but then so too was the lure of big city pop-oriented rig-ors, meaning all these years later, we've been left with a cooler crop of wax to harvest. Keep in mind that most of the records presented here were pressed on independent labels and hawked at gigs, sold in long gone hometown mom and pop shops, sent to radio stations and passed out to prospective paramours. The late, great promoter Pat Mason recalled that he often signed acts to his Lavender label 'just so we could say 'Recording Artist' on posters for bookings.'

If you want-ed to strike it rich, running a Northwest rock n' roll record company was not the way to do it. You'll notice we throw around phrases like 'short-lived' and 'one shot' throughout the notes, but with most of these records pressed in the hundreds, you can certain-ly see why some companies never got past their maiden release. In fact, future Raiders hitmaker Jim Valley recalls the hard time he had moving the entire one hundred copy run of his 1960 debut single. It was learn as you go. Hit records at the tail end of the decade by the Fleetwoods, Ventures and Wailers gave hope to eager hipsters and the emergence of labels like Jerden, Seafair-Bolo, Etiquette and Dolton unleashed an avalanche of Northwest boom makers.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Country and western music sparked many budding Northwest hopefuls into action. Several local acts have pointed to a radio soiree called Cherokee Jack and his Rhythm Ridin' Wranglers on Tacoma's KMO as early inspi-ration. On TV's Channel 13 The Bill And Grover Show gave nascent hometown rock n' roll acts like Little Bill and the Bluenotes a shot amidst their country programming. Some future country stars tapped into the rhythm hungry Northwest market at the crucial outsets of their careers. Buck Owens hosted the Bar K Ranch TV show in Tacoma, Willie Nelson cut his debut 45 in Vancouver, Washington (where he was working as a DJ at KISN) and Loretta Lynn first recorded in Bellingham.

The ornate Spanish Castle on Route 99 in Midway, Washington was a key stopover for many touring country acts, and while we rock n' roll fans salute the Wailers live AT THE CASTLE album, Ernest Tubb also taped a live set there. Olympia's Evergreen Ballroom is regarded as a top R&B wail but in Northwest music lore, but it actually featured an equal number of country acts and many wide eyed teens were caught in the musical crossfire of both camps. The thriving logging industry coupled with military bases brought the area many transient musicians who made their mark, no matter how seemingly insignificant at the time...
