The renowned label Light in the Attic is proud to release the "Dreamin' Wild" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in collaboration with River Road, Zurich Avenue and Roadside Attractions in 2023. The film tells the true story of brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson, whose teenage dreams of rock stardom suddenly came true 30 years later. The soundtrack combines old Donnie & Joe recordings (including the cult favorite "Baby") with exclusive new performances by Donnie Emerson, Nancy Sophia Emerson and actor Noah Jupe, as well as an original score by composer Leopold Ross (Black Mirror, A Million Little Pieces). Jupe, who plays the young Donnie Emerson, has re-recorded several of the duo's classic songs for the film, including their debut single "Thoughts in My Mind". The wistful ballad, written and recorded when the brothers were still in high school, was originally released in 1977 on their own Enterprise & Co. label. The soundtrack also includes "When A Dream Is Beautiful," a new song by husband and wife duo Donnie Emerson and Nancy Sophia Emerson, recorded in Nashville by the film's music producer and multiple GRAMMYr winner Dave Cobb.
Also available are Donnie & Joe's 1979 album "Dreamin' Wild" and the highly acclaimed 2014 collection "Still Dreamin' Wild: The Lost Recordings 1979-81," which includes highlights from the brothers' extensive song collection. Fans can also find exclusive Donnie & Joe merchandise on DonnieAndJoe. com. The film is based on a portrait by journalist Steven Kurutz and was written, directed and produced by Academy Award and Emmy nominee Bill Pohlad (whose extensive body of work includes Brokeback Mountain, 12 Years a Slave and the Brian Wilson biopic Love &a Mercy).
"Dreamin' Wild" stars Academy Award winner Casey Affleck, Emmy nominee Zooey Deschanel, Emmy nominee Walton Goggins, Chris Messina, Noah Jupe, Jack Dylan Grazer and Emmy and Grammy Award winner Beau Bridges. A true story of love and redemption, "Dreamin' Wild" centers on Donnie Emerson (Affleck / Jupe), a middle-aged singer-songwriter who learns that a record label is interested in re-releasing the album he and his brother recorded as teenagers in rural Washington State. Suddenly, the Emerson brothers find themselves in the spotlight as their 30-year-old album is hailed as a lost masterpiece. The rediscovery of the album not only brings with it the hope of a second chance, but also unearths long-buried emotions as Donnie, his wife Nancy (Deschanel), his brother Joe (Goggins / Grazer) and his father Don Senior (Bridges) come to terms with the past and their newfound fame.
"Dreamin' Wild," named after the brothers' 1979 debut album, is a River Road - Innisfree production by Academy Award winner Jim Burke, Academy Award and Emmy nominee Pohlad, Kim Roth, Viviana Vezzani and Karl Spoerri. Casey Affleck served as executive producer, alongside Emmy nominees Christa Workman, Dan Clifton, Steven Snyder and Tobias Gutzwiller. More about Donnie & Joe Emerson: Brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson grew up on a 1600-acre farm in Fruitland, WA, dreaming of musical stardom. Far removed from the punk and disco scene of the late 70s, the boys were mainly inspired by a tractor radio that they listened to for hours while working in the fields.
In the time between farm work and high school, the brothers spent the rest of their time playing music, with Donnie serving as primary songwriter, singer, guitarist and keyboardist and Joe setting the beat on drums. Donnie and Joe's parents nurtured their sons' talents - so much so that they used the family farm to build a state-of-the-art recording studio where the brothers self-produced their debut album "Dreamin' Wild". Released in 1979 on their own Enterprise & Co. label, the album offered a lo-fi mix of FM rock, pop, soul and funk, with songs like "Good Time", "Dream Full of Dreams" and "Baby" reminiscent of contemporaries like Marvin Gaye, Hall & Oates and the Brothers Johnson Despite the Emersons' passion, however, "Dreamin' Wild" was not the bestseller they had envisioned. It was a flop that nearly bankrupted the family.
However, Donnie and Joe's dreams did come true. All it took was three decades and a good dose of kismet. Around 2008, record collector, actor and blogger Jack Fleischer discovered a copy of the LP in an antique store in Spokane. At first, Fleischer was intrigued by the picture on the sleeve (featuring the boys in eye-catching Elvis-style jumpsuits), but then he was blown away by what he heard. It wasn't long before word of the Emerson brothers had spread and their soulful ballad "Baby" became a viral hit, spawning numerous cover versions (most notably by Ariel Pink & Dâm-Funk).
