Cruiser

A nostalgic cruise invites you to dream. We remember old movies, the departure of the great ocean liners with small orchestra on the quay. In contrast to today's mass tourism, a cruise back then was still a genuine adventure.

With this compilation we want to musically remember past times on the oceans of this world and at the same time provide momentum for your next summer party.

Famous names and great unknowns

Besides great stars, there are many excellent ‘no-names’ of rock and pop history to (re)discover. Billy Vaughn, Mina, Joey Dee, Harry James and Ricky Nelson everyone knows; but what about The Techniques, The Shells or Helene Dixon?

It's a similar story with the songs: Frankie Ford's Sea Cruise is a classic, but who knows the rare cover by The Keil Isles? There's also an instrumental version of the classic Beyond The Sea by Earl Grant, plus surf rarities by Billy Mure, Rickey Leigh and The Twins, and The Polaras.

Doo wop and ballads by The Shells, The Ivies and Marlon 'Madman' Mitchell round out the soundtrack. Mina comes to us with an Italian twist, while Don Drummond brings Jamaican flair. Rockabilly cats like Jack Scott, Marvin Rainwater and many others really make their mark, and with Hank Thompson and Speedy West, Western Swing fans don't miss out either!

And of course there are again notes to each song on the CD, as well as many illustrations in the 24-page booklet!

Vortreffliche Schiffsreise!

"Bear Family stellt dreiunddreißig Songs zum Thema Kreuzfahrt vor, oder, wie es im Untertitel heißt, "33 Ocean Steamers For Your Vacation". Also, auf zur musikalischen Urlaubsreise! Und aufgrund der Vorstellung der Stücke dürfte es sich um eine äußerst nostalgische Kreuzfahrt handeln, werden doch Lieder aus den Jahren 1955-1964, überwiegend aus den Bereichen Rock’n’Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz und Pop geboten.

Wie in der Regel bei den Kompilationen von Bear Family Records, treffen wir auch auf hoher See auf eine Mischung von berühmten Künstler*innen, weniger bekannten und wohl total unbekannten. Ricky Nelson, Joey Dee & The Starliters, Billy Vaughn & His Orchestra, Harry James & His Orchestra oder Les Paul & Mary Ford sollten bekannt sein, bei Musikern wie Speedy West, Marvin Rainwater oder Jack Scott habe ich auch noch keine Schwierigkeiten, doch wenn es um Billy Mure’s Supersonic Guitars, Vince Maloy, The Polaras, Mina e I Solitari oder Helene Dixon geht, dann muss ich schließlich passen.

Aber – wozu gibt es denn dieses hervorragende Booklet? Hintergründe werden auf vierundzwanzig Seiten mit vielen seltenen Bildern und Erinnerungen beschrieben. Und – ganz bekannt geht es los, diesen Eröffnungstitel werden wohl recht Wenige noch nicht zu Gehör bekommen haben: "Sea Cruise" von Frankie Ford, aus 1958, mit richtigen Schiffsgeräuschen. Diesen Song haben Viele gecovert, dieses ist die originale Hit-Version, obwohl von Huey "Piano" Smith aus New Orleans komponiert, der den Song dann auch bereits, jedoch nicht so erfolgreich, bereits vorher aufgenommen hatte.

Ricky Nelson’s "A Long Vacation", das fällt sehr auf, dieser Song aus 1959 klingt verdammt nach dem zwei Jahre älteren "Not Fade Away" von Buddy Holly, und so wird man bei Songs aus jener Zeit stets etwas finden, was ähnlich klingt. Nicht so "By The Beautiful Sea" von Billy Mure’s Supersonic Guitars, ein Instrumental, das Züge einer Polka aufweist und ein wenig nach Musik für einen verrückten Kurzfilm klingt, französischen Filmen von "Monsieur Hulot" würde das auch gut stehen. Wo wir gerade bei Frankreich sind – "La Mer", das kenne ich ja von Charles Trenet, dem Chansonnier, hier spielt es Earl Grant als Instrumental unter dem Titel "Beyond The Sea", mit fetter Hammond-Orgel swingt es jazzig dahin.

Wer um Himmels Willen ist Karl Hammel, Jr.? Der Mann geht als eines der One-Hit-Wonder durch, sein "Summer Souvenirs" hielt sich acht Wochen lang in den Billboard Charts und erklomm Platz achtundsechzig, in 1961. Ja, ein angenehmer harmonischer Pop-Song jener Zeit. Die erste richtig gute Überraschung erreicht mich mit Vince Maloy, sein "Soda Pop" aus 1958, ein fetziger R&B-Titel im Fahrwasser solcher Sachen wie "Wine Wine Wine" von Floyd Dixon (1952) und ähnlicher Stücke. Hier ist es die scharfe Gitarre, die den Song so fetzig anreichert.

Ferner gibt es halt die übliche Mischung, Doo-Wop der Vocal Group The Ivies, Rock’n’Roll von Bobby Gray, Surfmusik von Pete Cummins And The Redeemers Four und The Polaras, die nur vier Stüvkr aufgenommen haben sollen, Popsongs wie "Teenie Weenie Bikini" von Mitchell Torok, schmachtende Unterhaltungsmusik von Dick Haymes & Eileen Wilson, R&B von Big Jay Mercer, Jazz mit großem Orchester (Harry James And His Orchestra), Rockabilly mit Marvin Rainwater, ach ja, und das so sehr bekannte Thema von "Sail Along Silvery Moon" von Billy Vaughan And His Orchestra, das mich an meine Kindheit erinnert, denn wenn das im Radio lief, wurde lauter gedreht.

Etwas heraus sticht noch der Steel-Guitar-Virtuose Speedy West, der hier allerdings, entgegen seines Namens, mit "Rippling Waters" eine schmachtende Instrumental-Ballade vorlegt. Eine sonderbar klingende Version von "Summertime" gibt es von der mysteriösen Band Chubby Chops And The Twisting Cyclones, und Mina con I Solitari entführen uns mit "Tintarella Di Luna" nach Italien, hat der Kreuzfahrtdampfer wohl auch dort kurz angehalten. Stark – auch Ska wird noch geboten, Don Drummond And The Skatalites zeichnen dafür verantwortlich! Und mit einem klassischen Duo werden wir verabschiedet, Les Paul & Mary Ford mit "In The Good Old Summertime", und wir können uns am so virtuosen und innovativen Gitarrenspiel von Les Paul erfreuen!"

Take a trip to the sea with this mighty sweet collection – a whole batch of boat and summer-related tracks from the glory days of the 7" single – served up in a variety of different genres, and with a mix of music that would work pretty darn well for a winter cruise as well! The package has all the great look and groovy vibe as the other excellent entries in the Destination series from Bear Family – detailed notes that match the colorful package, and a set list of 33 tracks we never would have thought to bring together like this!
