There were standing ovations and the Panorama Audience Award at the 2013 Berlinale: Felix van Groeningen's new cinematic opus “The Broken Circle” is currently the best-attended indie feature film from Belgium. The Flemish filmmaker has succeeded in creating a stirring melodrama. The third main role in “The Broken Circle” is played by the film music. If only because Elise (Veerle Baetens) and Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) perform with a country and bluegrass band in numerous key scenes. The 15 songs on the soundtrack are more than just accessories. Guitarist and dobro player Bjorn Eriksson rearranged various country and bluegrass classics for the film and its main characters. The repertoire includes versions of Townes Van Zandt's “If I Needed You”, June Carter-Cash and Johnny Cash's “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and Lyle Lovett's “Cowboy Man”. They were re-recorded by the Belgian Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band. The soundtrack has already climbed to the top of the charts in Belgium. With a sound that clearly contrasts with the US originals, the film music has sparked a veritable bluegrass fever there. The release takes place in close cooperation with the German cinema distributor Pandora Film.
