This month Ace can reveal that we are affording the same treatment to perhaps Stax’ biggest traditional soul artist of the post-Otis Redding era, with the first of two volumes that will cover the singles of Johnnie Taylor from 1965 through to the end of 1973 – a job long overdue, even if we do say so ourselves.
Across our two volumes it’s possible to trace JT’s musical evolution from bluesy soul contender to bonafide soul superstar, from the consistent but comparatively modest hits he enjoyed during the label’s ‘blue’ era to the non-stop top 10 R&B/Top 50 Pop success that came his way after ‘Who’s Making Love’ (a song he hated, incidentally!) put him front and centre in the Soul winners circle in 1968.
This compilation features all of Taylor’s ‘blue’ singles and carries his hit streak of the ‘yellow’ Stax era through to the end of 1970 with ‘Steal Away’. Being a singles compilation we have endeavoured to use mono masters where we were able to find them. Some of these mono mixes differ considerably from the stereo versions that the world has become familiar with, and a number being reissued here for the first time ever.
As always, the superb remastering here is complemented by a booklet that features the usual high standard Kent annotation and a wealth of label shots and ephemera that makes the package as good to look at as it is to listen to!
In the wake of the undoubtedly positive reception we are sure this collection will receive you can look forward to the fact that the second and final volume of Taylor’s 45s will hopefully be with you by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

Um ins Bewusstsein des Mainstream-Publikums zu gelangen, musste sich Johnnie Taylor für eine Weile vom Blues abwenden.
Unter der visionären Leitung des Produzenten Don Davis (der vom Stax-Boss Al Bell aus Detroit importiert wurde) ließ Taylor den makellosen modernen Bluesansatz hinter sich, den er Mitte der 60er-Jahre mit den Stax-Hausautoren Isaac Hayes und David Porter als Hauptquelle für frisches Material perfektioniert hatte, um mit dem treibenden Millionenhit Who's Making Love 1968 eine tanzbarere Richtung einzuschlagen. Danach blieb Taylor klugerweise zunächst bei diesem flotteren Stil und landete so 1969 drei weitere Hits, Take Care Of Your Homework, Testify (I Wonna) und Love Bones, sowie den 71er R&B-Charttopper Jody's Got Your Girl And Gone, alle meisterlich von Davis produziert.
Mit dem sarkastischen Cheaper To Keep Her, Ende des Jahres 1973 ein #2 R&B/#15 Pop-Smash, ging Johnnie wieder ein Stück in Richtung Blues, wenn auch der moderneren Art mit einem jazzigen, mitreißenden Groove. Der leichtfüßige Walking-Bass und die geschmackvollen Akkordwechsel basierten auf Killer Joe, einem coolen Instrumentaltitel (1960) des Jazztets unter der Leitung des Trompeters Art Farmer und des Tenorsaxofonisten Benny Golson. Gitarrist Bobby Manuel ist der einzige Musiker, dessen Mitwirkung an der Aufnahme von Cheaper To Keep Her feststeht; aber es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass auch andere Mitglieder der Stax-Hausband beteiligt waren, denn Davis hat die Nummer in Memphis eingespielt (was nicht immer der Fall war, wenn er Aufnahmen mit Johnnie produzierte).
Sir Mack Rice, zu dieser Zeit als Stax-Songwriter tätig, war es gewohnt Hits zu schreiben; zu seinen anderen Triumphen gehören Wilson Picketts Mustang Sally und Respect Yourself von den Staple Singers. "Eddie Floyd und Steve Cropper kamen eines Tages nach Detroit zur Vertriebsfirma. Dort trafen wir uns zufällig",sagt Rice."Er und Steve Cropper sagten: 'Mann, wir brauchen dich in Memphis. Wir brauchen dich als Autor!'" Floyd und Rice hatten einige Jahre zuvor bei den Falcons gesungen, also kannten sie sich gut. Macks zynische Story im vorliegenden Song wird Romantikern wohl kaum zusagen, denn Taylor rät den Zuhörern, seinen Partner auf keinen Fall zu verlassen, egal wie schlimm die Ehe ist – denn das Zahlen von Alimenten kann sich als das viel fatalere Schicksal erweisen..!
Taylor landete kurz nach dem Stax-Niedergang seinen größten Verkaufsschlager, immer noch mit Davis als Produzent. Disco Lady war Anfang 1976 J.T.s erster Hit für Columbia und schlug voll ein: Nummer eins in der Pop- und R&B-Hitparade und die erste offizielle Platin-Single überhaupt. Johnnie war bei Malaco Records in Jackson, Mississippi, immer noch bestens im Geschäft, als er am 31. Mai 2000 in Dallas einem Herzanfall erlag.
