Great vulnerability is often part and parcel of great artists. The songs that endure and accompany the lives of their listeners are often those in which the artist bares his or her soul. Nora Jane Struther's new album Champion is made up of such songs.

This collection of 13 songs is the first release since Struther's 2015 album Wake, which earned her the praise and attention of major US media outlets such as NPR Music, Rolling Stone and Fresh Air. She recorded the album with her longtime touring band The Party Line - the chemistry and understanding between the musicians is palpable. The album, produced by Neilson Hubbard in Nashville, is full of musicality and unexpected arrangements that blur the lines between folk, roots and rock. The result is the audible feeling that everyone in the studio is having fun, which is transferred to the listener.

While Wake explored themes of new love and beginnings, on Champion Struthers documents the challenges of adult life, laments the increasing intrusion of technology into the private sphere and openly lays out the concerns of a young woman coping with infertility.

The album is a platform through and through for Struthers' voice and her extraordinary storytelling ability.
