Dusty Springfield: Dusty (LP, 180 Vinyl, Mono)
,-
Originally released in November 1964, this well-programmed disc features the US-only single 'All Cried Out' and two of Dusty's signature performances in the ballads 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself,' and 'My Coloring Book.' Several songs such as 'I Wish I'd Never Loved You' and 'Summer Is Over' were B-sides or EP cuts elsewhere, and tracks like 'Guess Who' would not even see release in the UK until the CD era. Once again, the mono mixes of many of these cuts have not been reissued on vinyl since the 1960s.

This is Dusty Springfield's second album for Philips Records, and follows a succession of single hit records. Dusty is fast becoming America's Number-one pop female singer, and this new album show-cases her exciting versatility.
She's an O'Brien from London . . . Irish and Scottish descent. . . but she was identified with The Springfield's. She's not too sure she likes her name, but it's too late to change it. Her favorite actor is Daffy Duck, she hates her face, "my nose is too long," wears mascara on her eyelids (looks good), loves chocolate cream pie, shocking pink, Monica Vitti, Sam Cooke, hates "desperately masculine" men. She thinks she's overweight. She's five feet three inches tall, has green eyes, weighs eight stone (112 lbs.) is 23 years old and one of England's top three female singers.
Ask her a stupid question, and she invariably gives a far-out answer:
"What luxury would you want most?"
"All of Twentieth Century Fox musicals, I could sit in bed, push a button and get any movie I wanted." "What was your greatest handicap in starting out?"
"My face and middle-class background. The upper and lower classes are uninhibited, the middle-class is too restricted."
"If you had to do it all over again, would you do it any differently?"
"That's a question for Marlene Dietrich. Come back in fifty years."
She likes the glory of her career but hates work. She has an aunt who works unglamorously in social work, her father works for the income tax bureau, her brother writes, she lives on a dull street (Baker Street) and loves flying and arriving at places, particularly Rome and New York. She has been described as "hip" and "in." She is.
She never seems to be the same for there is a constant element of the unexpected about her. She comes on stage simply dressed looking like a uool jazz singer, but her voice is unexpectedly husky in the manner of the "welter." When you meet her she is unexpectedly foreign looking with all the chic and insouciance of a girl at Portofino or Santo Stephano. Her speaking voice is (once again unexpectedly) clipped and British. One is constantly having to reform an impression.
As a singer she wants to keep developing, "I don't want to be an entertain-er doing a lot of silly things on stage like wearing hats and dancing," and "I want to sing the songs I like and make other people like them too."
"I am not fun loving" she says, in case you've got the wrong impression. She may hate work, but she is completely wrapped up in her career. "I suppose some people could have a successful career and marriage ... I couldn't... but I'll probably try." "I went from school to singing, I haven't had much time for parties or boys. I prefer small informal parties, slopping around and playing records. I need music at a party."

Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield.
Born Mary O'Brien in London's Hampstead district on 16 April 1939. She performed with her brother Tom as a semi-professional folk duo in summer camps as early as 1957. The following year Dusty Springfield joined the Lana Sisters. In 1959, together with her brother and Tim Feild (later replaced by Mike Longhurst-Pickworth alias Mike Hurst), she founded the trio The Springfields, which received its first contract with Philips in 1961. Of ten singles released by 1964, five reached the UK charts - one only appeared after the three had already split up.
Dusty Springfield continued as a soloist. Their debut single was released in November 1963. Thanks to her outstanding voice she quickly became one of the most sought-after singers in England. In December 1964, it made the headlines in a different way. At a concert in South Africa, she refused to sing in front of an audience that had to sit separately by skin colour. The result: a few hours in jail and deportation. In 1967 she sang'The Look Of Love' for the James Bond film parody'Casino Royale'. Hits like 'I Only Want To Be With You', "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself', 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' made them famous on all continents. Further hits like'I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten' and'Son Of A Preacher Man' followed. Their LP highlight was "Dusty In Memphis', recorded with local stars. During the 70's it became quieter around the singer, between 1980 and 1984 there was complete radio silence. This was followed by a single in duet with Spencer Davis (' - Private Number') on the small allegiance label (ALES 3).
Dusty Springfield made a top comeback in 1987. Their single "What Have I Done To Deserve This', recorded together with the Pet Shop Boys, reached number 2 in the charts. A following duet with Richard Carpenter ( -'Something In Your Eyes' - A&M) failed the audience. Also their only German-language single had not been able to place itself 23 years before in the hit lists. Dusty Springfield died on March 2, 1999, after a long and serious illness, and the cream of English pop music of the last 30 years appeared at the funeral ceremonies.
Countless personal letters of condolence - for example from Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the English royal family, from politics and the entertainment industry - underlined the exceptionally high reputation of the class singer in her home country. Guitarist and singer Mike Hurst drew attention to himself once again in September 2000. In ten years of musicological work as a researcher he had found out that war songs from Lower Saxony are the real origin of rock music.
