Musicians have a hard time with record bosses. First they fight for the first contract. And if the debut brings in the desired success, their voice is driven through all imaginable sound kitchens of the arrangers. But once the stations such as crunchy combo, fat big band and cuddly string orchestra have been worked through, there is finally an opportunity for some artists to play entirely for themselves again.
This album is a product in its own right and shows that Nina Simone didn't need any outside help to put her striking and expressive vocals in the spotlight. Acting as her faithful companion to the songs about loneliness, identity crises and longings is the piano, which she mastered as confidently as her voice. The piano parts are much more than just pleasing accompaniment. Depending on the piece and the mood, they vary from classical-bluesy tone to late-romantic glow to avant-garde aggressiveness. And yet all the titles have one thing in common: they portray in bizarre beauty a multi-layered personality with rough edges.
