The Shangri-Las Myrmidons Of Melodrama (CD)

The Shangri-Las – Myrmidons Of Melodrama

Teenage drama, girl-group pop and rock’n’roll – the legendary Shangri-Las in an essential RPM collection!

Few 1960s girl groups combined teenage drama, rock’n’roll, pop and streetwise attitude as convincingly as the Shangri-Las. With their cinematic songs, dramatic arrangements and unforgettable vocals, the New York group became one of the defining acts of the golden age of girl-group music.

Myrmidons Of Melodrama brings together a substantial selection of the Shangri-Las’ most memorable recordings. Among the highlights are the classics “Remember (Walkin’ In The Sand),” “Leader Of The Pack,” “Give Him A Great Big Kiss,” “Out In The Streets,” “Give Us Your Blessings,” “The Train From Kansas City,” “I Can Never Go Home No More,” “He Cried” and “Past, Present And Future.”

Their records were unlike almost anything else in contemporary pop. Spoken dialogue, dramatic storytelling, atmospheric production and Mary Weiss’ distinctive vocals transformed the songs into miniature teenage melodramas. “Leader Of The Pack” remains their signature recording and one of the most recognizable girl-group classics of the 1960s.

This RPM Records edition is particularly valuable to collectors, containing 33 tracks, including their two 1964 Scepter single sides, an alternate take of “Give Him A Great Big Kiss” and four rare radio spots featuring Mary Weiss. The original RPM edition also features an elaborate six-panel fold-out insert with photographs and notes.

An essential release for girl-group collectors, 1960s pop fans, rock’n’roll enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by the darker, dramatic side of American teenage music.
