Sha Na Na haben ihren geradlinigen Rock & Roll-Revivalismus der 50er Jahre in eine erfolgreiche Tourneekarriere verwandelt, auch wenn sie nie so populär waren wie live. Das Image und der Stil der Gruppe waren unverschämt anachronistisch, da sie die Pop- und Doo-Wop-Standards der 50er Jahre abdeckten, ihre Haare in der Greaser-Mode zurückschlugen und in extravagante Kostüme der 50er Jahre gekleidet waren.

Sha Na Na gründete sich 1968 an der Columbia University und machte sich schnell einen Namen mit Live-Auftritten, oft im Fillmore East, bei denen es sich um einen Tanzwettbewerb für das Publikum handelte. Die ursprüngliche Besetzung bestand aus den Sängern Rob Leonard, Scott Powell, Johnny Contardo, Frederick "Denny" Greene, Richard "Ritchie" Joffe und Don York, sowie den Gitarristen Chris Donald, Elliot Cahn und Henry Gross, dem Bassisten Bruce Clarke, dem Schlagzeuger John "Jocko" Marcellino, den Pianisten "Screamin'" Scott Simon und John "Bowzer" Bauman und dem ehemaligen Danny und dem Saxophonisten Leonard Baker. Sha Na Na's großer Durchbruch kam mit einer Buchung beim Woodstock Festival 1969; sie fingen mit dem Publikum an und begannen eine Reihe von Auftritten in Rock & Roll Lokalen und Nachtclubs.

Gross ging 1970 zu einer Solokarriere und erzielte sechs Jahre später mit "Shannon" einen Top-Ten-Hit, was seine alte Gruppe nie konnte; Sha Na Na Na war weitgehend ein Live-Act, der auf Nostalgie und Unterhaltungswert spielte, was sich nicht so gut auf Platte übersetzte. Trotz interner Probleme wie Nervenzusammenbrüche und dem Tod des Mitglieds Vincent Taylor durch eine Überdosis Heroin im Jahr 1974 erreichte die Gruppe ihren Höhepunkt in den späten 70er Jahren, als sie von 1977 bis 1981 ihre eigene syndizierte Fernsehshow moderierte und im Film Grease von 1978 auftrat.

Screamin' Scott Simon schrieb den Song "Sandy" für den Film mit, während Jon "Bowzer" Bauman seine Fernsehkarriere fortsetzte, indem er eine Morgensendung in Los Angeles moderierte und häufig in mehreren Spielshows zu Gast war.
