Singing groups come in all sizes and styles,with unique names and special sounds.Some groups are flash-in-the-pans, here today and gone from the record scene tomorrow. Some groups are one-timers, with only one hit to their names. So, it's pretty obvious that groups have to have something extra special to stay with it.

The five talented guys known collectively as the Tokens obviously have that some-thing special. They recorded their first big smash, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, back in 1961. In the summer of 1963 they were again in evidence on the best-selling charts. And that's quite a record. But then, the Tokens are quite a group. Versatility is one of the keynotes of their continuing popularity over the years. These boys always distinctive, is not always the same. They seem to have a special knack for tailoring their sound to a song, not vice versa.

And this talent makes for the fresh, original quality that characterizes the Token's recordings.
You'll hear just what we're talking about in this album, a Tokens collection including several songs that were originally hits by other record stars. It's a tough stint do do well, but these fellows are up to the challenge as they apply that unusual Tokens sound to hits like Earth Angel, Life Is But A Dream, You're Adorable and This Endless Night.

Ein Meister der Melodie ist gegangen

Am 27. Februar 2026 ist Neil Sedaka im Alter von 86 Jahren verstorben. Mit ihm verliert die Musikwelt einen der letzten großen Melodiker des 20. Jahrhunderts – einen klassisch ausgebildeten Pianisten, einen präzisen Komponisten und einen Sänger, der den amerikanischen Pop über Jahrzehnte geprägt hat.

Sedaka war kein Zufallsstar. Er studierte an der Juilliard School in New York und beherrschte sein Handwerk von Grund auf. Diese solide Ausbildung verband er mit dem Instinkt für eingängige, klar strukturierte Songs. Gemeinsam mit seinem langjährigen Partner Howard Greenfield schrieb er im Brill Building einige der bedeutendsten Pop-Hits der frühen Sechzigerjahre – darunter Oh! Carol, Calendar Girl, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen und Breaking Up Is Hard To Do [Emery, Always Magic in the Air, Oxford University Press].

Mit Breaking Up Is Hard To Do gelang ihm 1962 ein Nummer-1-Hit in den USA; 1975 machte er die Balladenversion desselben Songs erneut zu einem Chart-Erfolg – ein in dieser Form seltenes Kunststück in der Popgeschichte [Whitburn, The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, Record Research]. Spätestens mit dem Grammy-prämierten Welthit Love Will Keep Us Together (1975) als Komponist bewies Sedaka, dass seine Melodien Generationen überdauern [Grammy Awards, https://www.grammy.com].

Die 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre waren sein Fundament: eine Dekade voller handwerklich präziser Produktionen, klarer Harmonieführung und unverwechselbarer Hooks. Sedaka stand für eine Zeit, in der Songs noch komponiert, nicht konstruiert wurden. Kein Effektfeuerwerk, keine Studio-Tricks – sondern Melodie, Struktur und Disziplin.

Nach dem Einbruch seiner Karriere Mitte der 1960er bewies er Charakter. In den 1970ern gelang ihm ein eindrucksvolles Comeback – international gefeiert, von Kollegen respektiert, vom Publikum neu entdeckt. Dieser zweite Aufstieg war kein Zufall, sondern das Resultat eines belastbaren musikalischen Fundaments.

Neil Sedaka hinterlässt ein Werk, das Maßstäbe setzt. Seine Lieder sind Teil des kollektiven Gedächtnisses geworden. Sie stehen für eine Epoche, in der Popmusik noch ausgebildete Komponisten hervorbrachte und Melodien Bestand hatten.

Mit seinem Tod endet ein Kapitel Musikgeschichte. Seine Songs bleiben.
