Sebastian and Roth recorded the album at producer Chris Andersen's Nevessa Studio in Woodstock, NY, with the following musicians: the Mona Lisa Twins, Maria Muldaur, Geoff Muldaur, Lexie Roth, Ira Coleman and Eric Parker.

One of The Spoonful's biggest fans, Arlen Roth, the guitar maestro known for his studio and touring work with artists such as Simon & Garfunkel and John Prine, posed the question to Sebastian: why not record an album together? In the tradition of Roth's acclaimed reinterpretations of the songs of Simon & Garfunkel (Subway Walls & Tenement Halls) and the Rolling Stones (Paint It Black: Acoustic Stones), John Sebastian and Arlen Roth Explore the Spoonful Songbook was born.
