On the self-produced album Out of the Blues, Scaggs applies his iconic voice and guitar skills to a series of old classics by blues greats like Bobby "Blue" Bland, Jimmy Reed and Magic Sam, an unexpected and rousing rendition of Neil Young's "On the Beach" and original compositions by songwriter Jack Walroth.

Out of the Blues also includes four songs written or co-written by Scaggs' longtime friend and musical soulmate Jack Walroth. Jack Walroth is a left-leaning blues musician whom Scaggs met in the 1960s when they were both living in Madison, Wisconsin, and who moved to San Francisco around the same time as Scaggs.
