“A door would open up and I would just go through it, and I just kept doing that for all my life." — Mimi Roman

That is how Mimi Roman, at 87, tells us of her life, including her time as a successful country singer in the 1950s and early 60s. But it took talent and a strong, beautifully distinctive voice for those doors to open, and to go far once on the other side. It also took guts and plenty of stamina for a 20-year-old Jewish cowgirl from Brooklyn to make her way to country music fame, albeit too briefly, before taking herself out of the game at the ripe old age of 28.

Although many country stars from the 50s and 60s have long faded into obscurity, Mimi Roman, for more than 60 years, has gently persisted in the hearts and minds of pure country, honky-tonk, and rockabilly fans around the world.

But what makes Mimi different from many country stars from that “Golden Age” who now reside somewhere in anonymity?

For many, the answer will be found in this special double album, The First Of The Brooklyn Cowgirls, which features newly released and restored personal acetates, publishing demos and radio and television transcriptions recorded during Mimi Roman's career.

Mimi Roman

Owen Bradley, Resident Producer bei Decca Records in Nashville, würde scherzhaft beklagen, dass ihm "ein Countrysänger, der Pop machen wollte, und ein Popsänger, der Country singen wollte" vorgeworfen wurde. Die Country-Sängerin war Patsy Cline. Die Popsängerin war Mimi Roman.

Mimis Name erschien nie auf der'Billboard'-Länderkarte. Dennoch machte sie zu ihrer Zeit mehrere Platten für ein großes Country-Label - Decca war die Heimat von Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells und Ernest Tubb - und sie arbeitete ständig bis zu ihrem freiwilligen Rücktritt von der Straße, noch in den Zwanzigern. Wanda Jackson, die sich in diesen Tagen etablierte, erinnert sich an einige gemeinsame Shows: "Unsere Karrieren verliefen eine Weile parallel.

Ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich sie gut kannte, aber ich mochte sie sehr. Ich liebte ihren Gesang, und sie war ein wunderschönes Mädchen - schwarze Haare, eine gute Figur und eine tolle Stimme. Aber das Radio spielte ihre Platten nicht, sie bekam keine Unterbrechungen."

Während Paul Cohen, der in New York ansässige Leiter von A&R bei Decca Records, "es sehr lustig fand, ein jüdisches Mädchen aus New York für ihn in Nashville aufzunehmen", sagt Mimi, dass das Plattenlabel ihre offizielle Biografie verfälscht hat, um sie für potenzielle Fans etwas schmackhafter zu machen. Zeitgenössische Presseberichte haben sie aus Salinas, Kalifornien; sie wuchs in der Nähe des örtlichen Rodeo auf, bevor ihre Familie nach New York zog, als sie vierzehn Jahre alt war.

Die Wahrheit ist, Mimi wurde in New York geboren (20. April 1934), und wuchs in der Bronx auf. Ihre Mutter war Tänzerin in der Radio City Music Hall Rockettes; ihr leiblicher Vater war so etwas wie ein Damon Runyon, der im Sportgeschäft tätig war. Als sie zehn Jahre alt war, heiratete ihre Mutter wieder und Miriam Lapolito wurde Mimi ("mein Bruder konnte'Miriam' nicht aussprechen") Rothman.

Die Familie, sagt sie, war relativ wohlhabend. "Mein Stiefvater machte Essiggurken, ein gutes Produkt, das er an Restaurants wie 21 und Grossinger's verkaufen würde. Mein Bruder und ich hatten beide Pferde, die wir in Brooklyn gehalten haben."

Sie besuchte die Erasmus Hall High School, vor Barbra Streisand und Neil Diamond, und die Hofstra University "Niemand würde sich an mich erinnern - ich verbrachte meine ganze Zeit im Stall oder mit einer Waffe in der Hand und schoss. Ich wollte im Gewehrteam sein, aber sie wollten keine Mädchen.

"Ich wurde National Rodeo Queen - beurteilt nach Aussehen, Persönlichkeit und Fahrkönnen - im Madison Square Garden."

Der Titel führte zu einer einmonatigen Anstellung im Garden, wo sie sich nicht nur um das Rodeo kümmerte, sondern auch um Little Champ, den Sohn des Headliners Gene Autry's Pferd, Champion.

"Ich hatte gehört, dass einer der Beamten im Madison Square Garden antisemitisch war, also änderte ich meinen Namen in "Rohman" und ließ das "t" fallen."

Ein Freund der Familie war Kameramann in Arthur Godfreys Fernsehsendung, was zu Auftritten in Paul Whitemans TV Teen Club" und dann in Godfreys eigenem Talent Scouts"-Programm führte; alma mater von zukünftigen Stars wie Frank Sinatra, Pat Boone und einige Zeit nach Mimis Auftritt, Patsy Cline. Mimi, die die'Opry' und'Jubilee U.S.A.' "In meinem Radio, unter der Decke, mitten in der Nacht in Brooklyn" gehört hatte, trug ihr Cowgirl-Outfit und sang Hank Williams' Weary Blues From Waitin'.

"I'd heard that one of the officials at Madison Square Garden was anti-Semitic, so I changed my name to 'Rohman,' dropping the 't'."
