Erster Top Ten Hit: Blue Shadows On The Trail (1948)

Lange bevor er seinen ersten Hitparadenerfolg feiern konnte, war Leonard Slye alias Roy Rogers, als „King Of The Cowboys“ in Amerika berühmt. Als Mitglied von Uncle Tom Murray`s Hollywood Hillbillies hat er 1931 seine musikalische Laufbahn begonnen. Er sang bei den International Cowboys, den Rocky Mountaineers, den O-Bar-O-Cowboys, den Texas Outlaws und wurde schließlich eines der vier Gründungsmitglieder der wohl berühmtesten Western-Gesangs-Gruppe, den Sons Of The Pioneers. Diese verließ er allerdings schon 1938, um sich in Hollywood ganz dem Filmgeschäft zu widmen.

Der erste Film mit Roy Rogers als Hauptdarsteller hieß 1938 Under Western Skies“. Rasch wurde Roy Rogers zum Western-Helden und Idol einer ganzen Generation. Bis 1951 hatte er in 88 Filmen mitgewirkt, meist zusammen mit seinem Pferd "Trigger“, das man heute ausgestopft im Roy Rogers Museum bewundern kann. Viele seiner alten Filme wurden immer wieder in der ZDF-Serie "Western Von Gestern“ gezeigt. Obwohl Roy Rogers in seinen Filmen auch immer als Sänger auftrat, ist er dennoch als Filmschauspieler berühmter geworden. Seine Schallplatten waren immer nur Nebenprodukte seiner Filmarbeit. Als in den 50er Jahren die große Zeit der singenden Filmcowboys zu Ende ging, wurde es auch um Roy Rogers ruhig. Ein Comeback 1970 mit Country Music brachte ihm nur vorübergehenden Erfolg in den Country Charts. Wichtig für die Freunde der Country Music sind Roy Rogers Schallplatten als Solist und als Mitglied der Sons Of The Pioneers."
