Why Can't It Go On
Floyd Robinson
Why Can't It Go On
Born and raised in east Nashville, Floyd Robinson launched a band, the Eagle Rangers, with future Hank Williams sideman Jerry Rivers and future studio bassist Bob Moore. Robinson (born in 1932, not 1937 or '38 as later bio's stated), played guitar with Little Jimmy Dickens and George Morgan before joining the Opry and working sessions. He then began writing songs for Tree Music, and formed a duet, Bart & Bart, with Tree manager Buddy Killen (later, Floyd was part of another duet, Jack & Daniel, with Autry Inman). Working sessions around Nashville, Robinson pitched his songs and got them cut by the likes of Bill Monroe, George Morgan, and the Browns.
His first major hit came when Jesse Lee Turner recorded a novelty item, The Little Space Girl. The month that Turner's record entered the charts, Robinson signed with RCA as an artist, and his second record for the label, Makin' Love, also sold a million. The follow-ups, none of which fared anywhere near as well, included Boudleaux Bryant's charming Why Can't It Go On. Robinson went on to record for several other labels, including the religious publisher Zondervan, for whom he started a line of kiddies records. All the while, he developed real estate, and retired to Florida in 1985.
