Formed over 40 years ago, Restless, led by guitar wizard Mark Harman, have been the front runners of neo-rockabilly ever since their first live appearance in 1980. They are, without doubt, one of the most successful acts of the genre. This cult status is founded on their talented musicianship and songwriting skills once again demonstrated on the new album, which is filled with only new and original songs.

"Ready to Go!" is the third Restless album on Bluelight label and this time the band has returned to the quartet line from of 1986-1987 featuring Mark Harman, Ben Cooper on drums, Mick Malone on guitar and Jeff Bayly on bass. You can argue whether or not "Ready to Go!" matches the band's classic early albums, but you can also be sure it's another gem and that the band are still at the top of their game just as the single, "Love Like a Bullet", taken from the new album, shows.

Gründung

Restless ist eine britische Neo Rockabilly Band, die 1978 von den Brüdern Mark und Paul Harman zusammen mit dem Drummer Ben Cooper in Ipswich, England, gegründet wurde und dessen Name auf dem gleichnamigen Song von Carl Perkins zurückzuführen ist.

Anfänge

Basierend auf dem Rockabilly Sound der 50er Jahre, entwickelten Restless, ähnlich wie die Stray Cats, ihren eigenen eigenwilligen Rockabilly Stil, indem sie damals aktuelle Sounds in ihre Musik einfließen ließen. Ihr Debut Album 'Why Don't You... Just Rock! ', 1981 in England aufgenommen, erschien Anfang 1982 auf dem legendären Nervous Records Label von Rockin' Roy Williams. Das Album ist derart innovativ, dass Restless sich sofort an die Spitze der damals wie Pilze aus dem Boden schießenden Neo Rockabilly Bands setzte und bis heute die Führung der Szene übernahm.

Mark Harman

Die Band lebt besonders von dem spektakulären Gitarrenspiel des Mark Harman. Sicherlich hört man deutlich Marks Einflüsse von legendären Gitarristen, wie Cliff Gallup (Gene Vincent's Blue Caps) oder Scotty Moore (Elvis Presley) heraus, jedoch hat Harman seine Art des Spielens verfeinert, Jazz-Einflüsse zugelassen, Pop und New Wave Einflüsse genutzt und auch Anteile des Guitar-Picking aus der Country Music. Er gilt zu recht als einer der weltbesten Rockabilly Gitarristen und kann in einem Atemzug mit Boz Boorer (Polecats), Danny Gatton (Robert Gordon), Jeff Beck (Imelda May) und Brian Setzer (Orchestra & Stray Cats) genannt werden.

Neo Rockabilly

Ähnlich wie The Polecats, liegen auch Restless im Neo Rockabilly mittig zwischen dem traditionellen Rockabilly und dem ''bösen'' Psychobilly. Das verschaffte ihnen schon immer den Vorteil, sowohl auf den großen Rockabilly Festivals, wie Hemsby oder das Viva Las Vegas Festival, aufzutreten, als auch auf den großen Psychobilly Events, wie im legendären Klub Foot in London, dabei zu sein.

Andere Projekte und Aktualität

Restless sind bis heute aktiv, obgleich sie über die Jahrzehnte in unzähligen Nebenprojekten mitgewirkt haben, sowie in anderen Bands Tourneen und großartige Tonträger machten: The Harmany Brothers, Mark Harman Solo Projekte, The Space Cadets, Dave Phillips & The Hot Rod Gang, The Slim Jim Phantom Trio, um nur eine kleine Auswahl zu nennen. Seit 2016 ist Restless, nach einigen personellen Umbesetzungen, wieder in der Originalbesetzung unterwegs:
