The Ravens – Wegbereiter des R&B-Vocal-Group-Sounds

The Ravens gelten als eine der einflussreichsten Vocal Groups der späten 1940er- und frühen 1950er-Jahre. Angeführt vom charismatischen Basssänger Jimmy Ricks, prägten sie den frühen Rhythm & Blues mit ihrem markanten Harmoniegesang und einem Sound, der den Weg für spätere Doo-Wop-Formationen ebnete.

Trotz zahlreicher Besetzungswechsel blieb der typische Ravens-Sound dank Ricks’ unverwechselbarer Stimme erhalten. Mit Rock Me All Night Long landeten sie 1952 nach längerer Pause einen R&B-Hit (#4), begleitet von energiegeladenem Piano und einem stimmungsvollen Vokalarrangement. In den Folgejahren nahmen sie für Mercury und später Jubilee Records weitere starke Singles auf – musikalisch hochwertig, aber ohne kommerzielle Erfolge.

Jimmy Ricks blieb eine Schlüsselfigur der Szene und gilt bis heute als einer der bedeutendsten Basssänger der R&B-Geschichte. Die Ravens stehen für stilprägende Vokalharmonien, frühe Chart-Erfolge und den Beginn einer neuen Ära im schwarzen US-Gesang.
