When Elvis joined the army in 1958, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and his label were desperately searching for material they could release to satisfy the demands of his fanatical, adoring fans.

A Date With Elvis consists of singles and unreleased material from his early Sun days from 1954 to 1957. With songs from Bill Monroe and Charlie Feathers to Leiber and Stoller, this may be a filler single compilation, but it's all classic material from one of rock's legends at the height of his career.

A Date With Elvis was originally released in July 1959, the second year of Elvis' two-year stint in the army. Concerned that his enlistment might ruin his career, RCA Victor released three compilation albums featuring recordings from the archives and recordings previously only available on 7" singles. The aim of these compilations was twofold: to keep Elvis in the public eye until he returned to the limelight and to take advantage of the rapidly growing LP market.

This album consists of previously released material from several sessions at the famous Sun Studio in Memphis, one session in August 1956 at 21st Century Fox's Stage One, and two at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and reached number 32 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums Chart.

 

 

This TV special included the first ever unplugged session presented together with musicians from the early days such as Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. 1973 saw THE TV mega event at all: Elvis Presley, 'Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite'! Elvis' Honolulu appearance, the first time that a show was broadcasted worldwide via satellite! He was ahead of his time! Elvis Presley had 148 US single chart hits, including some so-called double-sider when A- and B-side both hit the charts like his 1956 smash 'Don't Be Cruel b/w Hound Dog', plus 15 EP hits between 1956 and 1977. Two billion of sold media and sound carriers by Elvis Presley is the estimated number! He received 14 Grammy nominations until 1978 and three Grammy for his Gospel interpretations. Elvis was the youngest artist when honored with the Bing Crosby Award (Lifetime Achivement Award) in 1971.

 

He is presented in 5 Halls of Fame (Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, Country, Blues and Gospel). Six of his song interpretations are collected in the Grammy Hall of Fame. On top of it all Elvis Presley got the most gold and platinum records and a Diamond-Award.
