The Penguins: Earth Angel (LP)

(Collectables) 12 tracks

With “Earth Angel,” The Penguins secured their place in doo-wop history. This Collectables compilation brings together twelve tracks from the classic Dootone repertoire of the Los Angeles vocal group, taking listeners back to the golden age of 1950s rhythm & blues.

The timeless love ballad “Earth Angel” is the natural highlight, the recording that carried The Penguins far beyond the doo-wop scene. The collection also features such memorable titles as “Hey Senorita,” “Love Will Make Your Mind Go Wild,” “Baby Let’s Make Some Love” and “Kiss A Fool Goodbye.” Romantic ballads, expressive lead vocals and tightly blended harmonies capture the irresistible charm of early vocal-group music.

The Penguins belonged to a generation of American groups whose close harmonies and street-corner vocal style helped shape the sound of early rock & roll. Their recordings combine the warmth of traditional vocal harmony with the raw, direct appeal of rhythm & blues.

Golden Classics is an appealing addition to any collection of doo-wop, early rock & roll and classic American vocal-group music. Beyond the legendary hit, it offers a chance to rediscover more of the group’s distinctive sound.

The Penguins
