This album documents the rare, unknown performances of the Berlin based orchestra under the direction of Werner Müller (1920-1998). The recording took place on September 29th 1961. A mere six weeks before the start of the building of the Berlin Wall. Müller had been working in the western part of town for over thirteen years. His orchestra performed the popular dance music of the day where progressive Jazz was unheard of. Therefore, the "Jazz Mutations" presented here for the first time, stands out as a rare musical find. The recording shows that Müller and his orchestra had something else to offer, namely an excellent crossover of Modern Jazz, symphonic classical music and contemporary avant-garde. Their music is a rich mixture of Westcoast Jazz, Hard Bop, Modern Classical and Blues. Similar to the sounds of Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Bill Holman.

Werner Müller

Der Berliner Werner Müller (geboren 1920) war in den 50er Jahren neben Kurt Edelhagen einer der bekanntesten Jazz-Orchesterleiter. Schon als Kind spielte er Geige, kam 1936 auf die Militärmusikschule in Bückeburg und war im Krieg Mitglied eines Militär-Musikcorps. In amerikanischer Gefangenschaft entdeckte er den Swing für sich und wurde 1945 als Posaunist in das Orchester von Kurt Widmann aufgenommen. Den Durchbruch schaffte Müller, als ihm 1949 die Leitung des RIAS-Tanzorchesters übertragen wurde. Dort versammelte er hervorragende Musiker wie Rolf Kühn um sich.

In den 50er Jahren bestimmte sein Sound viele Plattenproduktionen, unter anderem für Polydor und Teldec. Er begleitete Bully Buhlan, Renée Franke, Gerhard Wendland, Margot Hielscher, Rudi Schuricke, Friedel Hensch und die Cyprys, Lale Andersen, Caterina Valente und viele andere. Als Komponist gebrauchte er das Pseudonym Heinz Buchholz. In den 80er Jahren schrieb Werner Müller verschiedene Kriminalromane. Er starb 1998 in Köln.
