In a career that spanned over 50 years and 120 films, 1958s 'Thunder Road,' the tale of an outlaw moonshine runner caught between gangsters and G-Men on the roads of the southern USA, was Robert Mitchum's most personal movie. As well as starring, he wrote the story, produced, and effectively co-directed the film.

Mitchum also came up with the music, co-writing two songs, The Ballad Of Thunder Road and Whippoorwill, which he then turned over to composer Jack Marshall (the man who arranged Peggy Lee's Fever, and wrote the theme tune for 'The Munsters') to use as the basis of the soundtrack.

This compilation features the first ever release for Marshall's 'Thunder Road' music, for which he recruited legendary country guitarist Joe Maphis – 'The King Of The Strings' – to accompany the movie's famous, frantic car chases.

Alongside Marshall's soundtrack, the album gathers together spin-off singles recorded to promote the film in 1958, including Mitchum's iconic rockabilly hit, The Ballad Of Thunder Road, and lesser-heard tracks like Marshall & Maphis's instrumental Thunder Road Chase and Keely Smith's gorgeous Whippoorwill, as arranged by Nelson Riddle.

In addition, the album unearths original songs Mitchum hired singer Randy Sparks to write for his movie in 1957, but which were never used, and rounds up some of the greatest cover versions of The Ballad Of Thunder Road, from western swing star Tex Williams and bluegrass idols Jim & Jesse, through to surf group The Super Stocks and Memphis guitar guru Travis Wammack.

'Thunder Road' is presented in a digipac format and features all the usual high standard Bear Family trademarks; a 108-page booklet with abundant photographs, a history of the making of the film, and a discography of the tracks included by Damian Love.

Robert Mitchum war ein Paradoxon. Er war ein Mann, der sich zu Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber seiner Schauspielerei bekannte, aber von seinen Kollegen hoch geachtet wurde. Deborah Kerr, die mit ihm in "Heaven Knows Mister Allison" und "The Sundowners" spielte, sagte: "Als Schauspieler ist er großartig. Er ist ein fantastisch sensibler, anständiger Mensch." Mitchum erzählte Interviewern, dass er sich um nichts anderes kümmerte, als das Leben zu genießen, doch er arbeitete während seiner langen Karriere kontinuierlich, wie seine enorme Filmografie zeigt.

Obwohl die Musik nicht im Mittelpunkt von Mitchums Leben stand, war es immer etwas, das ihm Spaß machte und über das er sehr gut Bescheid wusste. Mitchum versuchte sich am Schreiben von Musik und Poesie und bei einigen Gelegenheiten wurde er zur Aufnahme überredet. Seine beiden Alben 'Calypso Is Like So' und' That Man' sind zusammen mit seiner Single-Aufnahme von The Ballad Of Thunder Road (die er als Cowriter geschrieben hat) auf 'That Man' (Bear Family BCD 15890 AH) zu hören.

Die Songs auf dieser CD können als die vergessenen Aufnahmen bezeichnet werden. Sie waren nicht zur Veröffentlichung bestimmt, aber zum Glück erblicken sie nun das Licht der Welt. Die ersten sechs Songs stammen alle aus dem Film 'Rachel And The Stranger' von 1948, in dem Mitchum mit William Holden und Loretta Young spielte. Holden stellte einen Mann dar, der seine ganze Energie in den Bau eines Gehöfts steckt, während er seine Frau für selbstverständlich hält. Als ein Fremder, gespielt von Robert Mitchum, auftaucht, beginnt Holden zu erkennen, wie sehr er sie liebt und dass er ihr nicht genug Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt hat. Der gesamte Film ist von diesen sechs Liedern, die hier zu hören sind, durchsetzt. Sie sind so entspannt und wehmütig wie Mitchums Darstellung des Fremden.

1969 spielte Mitchum im Western 'Young Billy Young' mit Angie Dickinson und Robert Walker. Frei nach der vermeintlichen Freundschaft zwischen Wyatt Earp und Billy Clanton ist Mitchum ein Sheriff, der Robert Walker unter seine Fittiche nimmt. Mitchum sang den Titelsong über den Vor- und Nachspann des Films.

Der faszinierendste Teil dieses Albums sind die sieben Songs, die Robert Mitchum als Demos aufgenommen hat. Der genaue Zweck dieser Aufnahmen ist nicht ganz klar, aber der Genuss, den sie bieten, ist offensichtlich. Die meisten Songs sind Standards und Mitchum zeigt, dass er sich mit ihnen genauso wohl fühlt wie mit den Songs aus seinen Filmen.

Robert Mitchum war 79 Jahre alt, als er am 1. Juli 1997 in seinem Haus in Santa Barbara, Kalifornien, starb. Am Ende war er lässig, was seine Karriere angeht. "Ich denke, wenn Produzenten eine Rolle haben, die schwer zu besetzen ist, sagen sie: "Schickt nach Mitchum, er wird alles tun". Bei einer anderen Gelegenheit wurde er gefragt, warum er dachte, seine Karriere hätte so lange gedauert. "Ich arbeite billig" war seine selbstironische Antwort.

Der wahre Grund war seine Einzigartigkeit, seine Professionalität und die Tiefe seines Talents.
