Wil Maring: An Ocean From Home

Wil Maring grew up in Makanda, Illinois, as the oldest of six children in a musical family. Through her father, an ethnomusicology professor, Wil came into contact with a wide variety of traditional ethnic music. At an early age she developed a love for folk and bluegrass music. At the age of ten she began to play the guitar, and soon she performed her own songs in coffeehouses and informal stages of her community.

During a year-long stay in Japan, where she worked on her thesis on Japanese folk music for a Master’s Degree in anthropology, Wil was an active member of two Japanese bluegrass bands. In 1988 Wil met the German bluegrass musician Mark Stoffel, and they began a musical partnership that led her to join Mark’s band 'Main Spring' and tour Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A year later Wil and Mark moved to Illinois where they started 'Shady Mix', a bluegrass band in which Wil was able to focus on her own ideas in a band context. Wil’s compositions and stage appearance led to numerous bookings at festivals in the Midwest. 'Shady Mix' debut recording, ‘Made In The Shade’ (1991) received excellent reviews in ‘Bluegrass Unlimited'.

Wil returned with Mark to Germany in 1992. She tours almost 120 days a year with a new formation of 'Shady Mix'. After two 'Shady Mix' CDs, Wil finally has produced a solo album. The CD 'An Ocean From Home' was produced by Mark Stoffel, and features primarily Wil Maring originals.

Wil Maring

Wil Maring wurde in Waterloo, Iowa, geboren und wuchs mit Ihren fünf Geschwistern in Makanda, Illinois auf. Durch ihren Vater, ein Ethno-Music Professor, kam Wil schon als Kind mit verschiedensten Musikrichtungen in Berührung. Dadurch entwickelte sie bereits in jungen Jahren eine Vorliebe für Folk- und Bluegrass Music. Im Alter von zehn Jahren begann sie Gitarre zu spielen und präsentierte bald darauf ihre eigenen Songs auf kleinen Bühnen. Während eines einjährigen Aufenthaltes in Japan schrieb Wil Ihre Diplomarbeit über japanische Folklore und war nebenbei in zwei japanischen Bluegrass-Bands aktiv. 1988 kam eine wegweisende Allianz mit dem deutschen Bluegrass-Musiker Mark Stoffel zustande. Wil schloß sich Marks Band 'Main Spring' an, die hauptsächlich in Süddeutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz tourte. Ein Jahr später übersiedelten sie nach Illinois und gründeten die Band 'Shady Mix', in der sich Wil zum ersten Mal wirklich musikalisch entfalten konnte. Wil’s Musik fand schnell Anhänger, zahlreiche Auftritte bei Musik-Festivals im Mittleren Westen waren die Folge. Eine ausgezeichnete Kritik durch 'Bluegrass Unlimited' verdiente sich das Debut-Album 'Made in the Shade' (1991). Seit 1992 lebt Wil wieder in Deutschland. Mit einer Neu-Besetzung von 'Shady Mix' ist sie fast 120 Tage im Jahr in ganz Deutschland unterwegs. Nach zwei CD-Veröffentlichungen der Band legt Wil nun ihr erstes Solo-Album 'An Ocean From Home' vor, dass fast ausschließlich eigene Kompositionen enthält.
