The Mar-Keys

Die Mar-Keys, ursprünglich bekannt als die Royal Spades, hatten mit ihrer ersten CD "Last Night" (Satellite), die 1961 von Chips Moman geschrieben und arrangiert wurde, einen Top Ten Hit. Zu den kleineren Hits von Othei gehörten Morning After', Popeye Stroll' und 1966 Philly Dog'. Alle waren für die Stax Company. Die erste von vielen Mar-Keys Besetzungen umfasste Packy Axton (Tenorsaxophon), Don Nix (Baritonsaxophon), Wayne Jackson (Trompete), Jerry Lee Smith (Orgel), Steve Cropper (Gitarre), Don 'Duck' Dunn (Bass) und Terry Johnson (Schlagzeug).

Alle waren weiße Jungs, zwei von ihnen (Cropper und Dunn) spielten auch in den MGs mit den schwarzen Musikern Booker T und Al Jackson, die wiederum in beiden Gruppen spielten. Als Staff-Musiker in den Stax-Volt Studios standen die Mar-Keys im Mittelpunkt des Memphis-Soul-Booms der Mitte der 60er Jahre und begleiteten die Hits von Otis Redding, Sam und Dave, Wilson Pickett et al. Axton gründete daraufhin die Packers ("Hole In The Wall" war 1965 ein Hit bei Pure Soul), während Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love (Tenorsaxophon) und Floyd Newman (Baritonsaxophon) sowohl in den Mar-Keys als auch im berühmten Sextett Memphis Horns spielten.
