The Maharajas: Floor Killers (LP)
14 Moody Garage gems from the Moody Vault
Moody Sixties Garage is arguably one of the greatest sounds rock'n'roll has ever produced. But what exactly is it? Back in the sixties, of course, there were no subgenres and so on.... it was all rock'n'roll, or teenbeat, or whatever. But every band needed a ballad. Some kind of last dance song was always needed that also gave the opportunity to show how sensitive and sweet and interesting the guys in the band were.
The garage ballad is quite a long way from the so-called teenage ballads of the early sixties - and even further from the awful power ballad that came with the seventies. It is also a long way from the soul ballad. It is the culmination of the combination of rock'n'roll/beat music and minor chords in slow tempos.
Most US garage bands took the Zombies as their model for this sound. But while the Zombies excelled at jazzy chords, clever progressions and damn complicated arrangements, the teen bands that tried to emulate this kind of song stuck to 3-4 basic chords and simple arrangements, creating what we now call Moody Garage - or Moody Punk Ballads. The tempo is slow to medium and the basic key is always minor.
The Moody Garage sound from the sixties also stood the test of time, as the music began to evolve into more psychedelic realms... the mournful wail of emotional pain, despair, loss and the realisation that one day we will all die.
The collection you now hold in your hands is dedicated to the atmospheric garage sound of the years 65-66, which I'm sure we all love to bits.
