Erwin Lehn was born on June 8, 1919 in Grünstadt in the Palatinate. Barely 6 years old, he received violin and piano lessons, later also saxophone and clarinet lessons. After his education at the municipal music school in Peine, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht, where he played in a music corps.

In 1945 Erwin Lehn started as a pianist with the Radio Berlin Dance Orchestra in Berlin. In 1951 he founded the Südfunk Dance Orchestra of the SDR in Stuttgart. In the following years, the Südfunk-Tanzorchester developed into one of the leading swing big bands in Germany.

Besides light music and Schlager, his love belonged to jazz. Erwin Lehn accompanied numerous well-known artists of the 50s and 60s such as Caterina Valente, Peter Alexander and Bully Buhlan. Erwin Lehn also composed many Schlager and wrote the music for numerous feature films. Together with greats like Paul Kuhn and Max Greger, he went on numerous tours and musically accompanied Hans Rosenthal's quiz shows with his orchestra.
