Kevin & The Blues Groovers: Something Old Something New Something Borrowed - Blues (CD)

(Basin Street Records) 9 tracks, digipack.

Kevin & The Blues Groovers deliver a strong set of roots music on their new album Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues. The album, due out July 15, 2022 on Basin Street Records, showcases the talents of rising vocal and piano star and former American Idol singer Kevin Gullage.

A native of New Orleans, Gullage has a great voice, top-notch keyboard skills and a hip, sophisticated style that is currently captivating blues listeners around the world. The record mixes Kevin's own songs with some top-notch classics that he has reworked in his own unique way. Although he is only 23 years old, Gullage is already a seasoned performer and songwriter who feels right at home in front of his all-pro band.
Born into a musical family in New Orleans, Gullage showed a lot of talent at a young age. He began his career as a multi-instrumentalist but eventually focused on piano, an instrument that led him to study at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp and later at Loyola University New Orleans. He has performed with Grammy-winning Blues Traveler at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and has appeared in a number of films, including The Last Laugh with Chevy Chase and Burning Cane starring Wendell Pierce. His voice was even heard in the 2019 Disney adaptation of Lady & The Tramp. He is a true music phenomenon who has a great career ahead of him and can compete with the best in the industry.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues begins with the glittering funk of "Shakey Ground." The Blues Groovers immediately stand out and have the ability to add hot sauce to every note they play. The group consists of bassist Tony Gullage (Henry Butler, Dr. John), Hammond B3 player Brandon Adams (Kenny Neal), guitarist Carlton Ross (Glenn David Andrews), saxophonist Roderick Jackson (Kenny Neal) and drummer Mac Carter (Jon Cleary). Add Gullage's powerful talents and you get a traffic-calming band led by the best singer in town. His vocals permeate the detailed arrangement of the song and will resound from the speakers. You know right away that it's going to be good.

"Movin' On" is a wonderfully soulful jazz-blues ballad that tells a breakup story that most people can relate to. Gullage lays out his case forcefully to the one who wronged him, testifying to what can only be described as righteous discontent. The piece features a polished, jazzy arrangement that adds much to its appeal, and also includes some smoking guitar work by Chicago bluesman Ronnie Baker Brooks. Gullage is expressive and honestly emotional, delivering his original lyrics with pain and grace.

Brooks reappears on a rocking cover of Robert Johnson's eternal "Sweet Home Chicago." His overdriven tone is a perfect complement to Gullage's powerful vocals and the band's horn and keyboard arrangement. What makes this track so great is the way Kevin and everyone involved infuse one of the most played songs in blues with creativity and pure joy. If this song doesn't make you smile and move, you should check your pulse.

One of the highlights of the record is Gullage's rendition of the Amy Winehouse hit "Valerie." It's refreshing to hear a blues artist go so far outside the genre for a song and pull it off so well. It's that kind of thinking that will really keep the blues alive and relevant for future fans. Gullage shines on standards like "Ain't Nobody's Business if I Do" and "The Blues Is Alright" as well as his own songs "So Called Friends of Mine" and "My Baby Gave Me The Blues (feat. Norman Sylvester)." He is the best young singer you will hear this year, without question. Listen to him once and you will be connected to the future of the blues.(Basin Street Records) 9 tracks, digipack
