The Kasper Collusion: Losing It (CD)
(Meyer Records) 13 tracks, digipack.
The tracks of The Kasper Collusion meander between their highly idiosyncratic musical fragments and a reminder that they might once have been simply beautiful songs. Disturbing moments flash up again and again, suggesting that these songs have gone a long way to finally arrive in the nowhere that now forms their musical resonating space. If you let yourself get involved with the music, you have to admit that there's no jazz playing here, at any rate - and nothing else that can be categorized in any way. Those who can't stand most of the songs offered in the country anymore, but at the same time desperately need them, might like this.
The lyrics occasionally stand in a strange contradiction to this musical aesthetic. One does not know exactly who is speaking to one: is it a songwriter sharing his sensitivities and views? That would not really fit to the musically unfolded song skepticism. If you stick to the title song, here someone is wavering between (political) anger and the loss of just that - and then the anger at those who do not even waver. Humor is also there, although not easy to discover. For example, in a sarcastic love song directed at the two former press secretaries of the US State Department.
The three actors of Collusion are at home in different scenes and contexts. Achim Tang (double bass) is today located in improvised music, having passed through a variety of musical stations in his career. The central aspect of his work is the preoccupation with the concept of art from a socio-cultural perspective and the critical examination of the reduction of the musician to the role of an instrumentalist. Kurt Fuhrmann (percussion) is interested in in-between areas where music can show its depth and intensity of evolved forms and at the same time open up to surprising timbres, formal experiments and improvisational freedom. He collaborates with classical musicians, contemporary composers and players of the improvisation scene, plays with flamenco soloists and indie bands and produces electronic music.
