(2002 'NorthernBlues') (62:03/14) Nach seinem Überraschungs-Debüt (CCD 11067) liefert uns der blutjunge kanadische Gitarrist (*1980) ein erstaunlich reifes Album ab. Lebte die erste CD von der Unbekümmertheit der Musiker, so belegt 'Bogart's Bounce' auf hörbare Weise die Entwicklung von JW und seines noch jüngeren Harmonicaspielers 'Southside' zu ebenbürtigen Mitstreitern der Etablierten. Selbst Kim Wilson im fernen Kalifornien hörte von dieser jungen Band, lud sie zu einer gemeinsamen Show nach New York ein und bot sich später überraschend als Mitwirkender der neuen CD an. Neben ihm liefert Gene Taylor, Wilsons Kollege bei den Fabulous Thunderbirds, ausgefeilte Piano-Licks. Das Album besteht zu 100% aus eigenem Material. JW bezieht sich auf Gitarristen wie Rick Holmstrom oder Little Charlie und hat bereits einen eigenen Ausdruck gefunden. Teils wildes, teils schräges Zeug, und wir können Kim Wilson nur zustimmen der meint, wenn es junge Typen wie JW und Southside gibt, sei es ihm um die Zukunft des Blues nicht bang'! Empfehlenswert für alle, die auf Bands wie den Mighty Flyers stehen / second release from this young Canadian band. They produced a lot of attention with their self-produced debut 'Defibrillatin'' (CCD 11067), a very raw and spontaneous recording. 'Bogart's Bounce' is taking the band to a new level. The production is excellent, it's all original material, and JW and the band are playing even better. Inspired by contemporaries like Rick Holmstrom or Rusty Zinn, JW has developed a style of his own. 18-year-old harp ace 'Southside' is playing some mean harmonica. Kim Wilson was impressed by JW when he asked him on stage in New York. He offered a participating role in producing and playing on the new album. So we have Kim, and also piano player Gene Taylor from the Fabulous Thunderbirds guesting. 'JW and Steve show that blues can be a music of youth ... it's great to see young people have the right idea about what blues music is,' says Wilson. And he's right.
