It's been almost eleven years since Tom Jones released his album Praise & Blame. On it, he paid tribute to his musical roots. Spirit In The Room (2012) and Long Lost Suitcase (2015) followed - and followed in the same successful vein. Jones is known for making cover versions his own through his unique, unmistakable voice. So it's only logical that the 80-year-old now returns with another album consisting largely of foreign material.

For the longplayer Surrounded By Time, Jones brought Ethan Johns and Mark Woodward on board as producers. He also wrote the track Samson And Delilah with them. Surrounded By Time also features songs by Bob Dylan (One More Cup Of Coffee), Terry Callier (Lazarus Man), Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam (Popstar) and Michael Kiwanuka (I Won't Lie).

Geboren am 7. 6.1940 in Pontypridd - Wales Der Sohn eines Bergmanns arbeitete sich mit Zähigkeit an die Spitze des Welt-Showbusiness. Nach ersten, freilich dünnen Erfolgen besang Tom Jones 1965 eine erste Langspielplatte mit iazzigen Evergreens, die unter dem Titel „FromThe Heart' erschien. Wenig später folgte der Titel „What's New, Pussicat“, der ihn erstmals in die Hitparaden schickte. Dieser Erfolg jedoch schien nicht von Dauer, denn es brauchte ein weiteres Jahr, bis Tom Jones sich endgültig einen Dauerplatz in den Hitparaden eroberte. Das gelang ihm zunächst mit dem Song „The Green Green Grass Of Home“.

Nach diesem Sentimentalerfolg begann eine unaufhaltsame Karriere, die besonders in den USA extrem dauerhaft ist. Zu Traumgagen tritt der ehemalige Maurer, der von sich behauptet, nichts außer Champagner zu trinken, bevorzugt in Las Vegas auf, während sein Stern auf dem europäischen Kontinent, den Tom Jones bewußt vernachlässigt hat, mehr und mehr verblaßt. Der Star, der seine Auftritte schon stets mit einer gehörigen Portion Sex zu würzen pflegte, lebt heute in London und Hollywood.
