Jennifer Hatlauf: Der Goldschakal: Lebenskünstler auf leisen Pfoten - Band 1

Note: This book is published in German language.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is no longer a marginal species in Europe. Its expansion from southeastern Europe into large parts of Central and Western Europe is well documented and biologically plausible. What is new is not the species itself, but the urgent need for a sober, science-based understanding. Volume I of this work provides exactly that foundation.

This first volume is dedicated exclusively to the biology, morphology, and ecology of the golden jackal. It opens with a precise taxonomic classification and a clear overview of the historical and current distribution of the species. Morphological and anatomical characteristics are analyzed in detail and rigorously distinguished from those of the wolf and the red fox—without simplification or speculation.

A central chapter focuses on the physiology of the golden jackal, highlighting functional differences compared to other European canids. Building on this, the book provides a comprehensive account of biology and ecology, including reproduction, social structure, communication, behavior, spatial and habitat use, and relevant diseases.

Particular emphasis is placed on the dietary spectrum and hunting behavior of the golden jackal. Data on prey selection, scavenging, and opportunistic feeding strategies are critically evaluated and placed in an ecological context. Potential interactions with other wildlife species are addressed objectively, without alarmism or downplaying possible effects.

The volume is rounded out by chapters on population genetics, habitat adaptability, and the integration of the golden jackal into existing ecosystems. Throughout, the focus remains on validated data, current research, and precise terminology.

Volume I forms the indispensable scientific basis for understanding the golden jackal in Europe—fact-based, clear, and directly relevant to research, management, and applied wildlife biology.

"Jennifer Hatlauf"

Dr. Jennifer Hatlauf is a wildlife ecologist with a clear scientific focus on the golden jackal. For many years, she has been studying its potential habitats, expansion dynamics, and ecological role using data-driven, field-based research approaches.

To refine applied methods in golden jackal research, she conducted fieldwork in European and Asian regions with high population densities. The key question of the species’ actual presence in Austria led her, in 2015, to initiate the “Golden Jackal Project Austria” at the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Game Management, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). The project was supported by a BOKU research scholarship and funding from the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

In close collaboration with international experts, Dr. Hatlauf completed her doctoral research on golden jackal monitoring, resulting in the publication of numerous new scientific findings. Her work combines modern monitoring techniques with practical field research and international comparability.

Based in the Vienna Woods, Dr. Hatlauf is active throughout Austria and neighboring countries alongside her academic work. Her extensive expertise and practical experience are now made accessible in this comprehensive volume, providing a structured and scientifically sound reference for professionals and researchers alike.
