After a long time, BAF18026 – Etta James: Tell Mama is available again – one of the most important soul recordings of the late 1960s and a key milestone in the artist’s career.

The story behind this album is closely tied to one of the most fascinating episodes in American music history. Following a fallout between Jerry Wexler (Atlantic Records) and Rick Hall (FAME Studios, Muscle Shoals), Hall turned to Chess Records in Chicago and convinced Leonard Chess to send some of his top artists to Alabama. As a result, Etta James recorded at the legendary FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals between August and December 1967.

These sessions marked a turning point for Etta James. Her career had stalled, but Tell Mama signaled a strong comeback. Backed by the outstanding Muscle Shoals musicians, she delivered performances marked by energy and emotional depth.

The title track Tell Mama and Security (written by Otis Redding) both reached the pop Top 40 and R&B Top 20. However, I’d Rather Go Blind left the most lasting impression and later became a widely covered standard.

Today, Tell Mama is regarded as one of the finest soul albums ever recorded. This reissue marks its return to vinyl for the first time in over forty years, in its original artwork, remastered from the original tapes and pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl.

Here’s the story. Down in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Atlantic Records‘ Jerry Wexler had fallen out with Rick Hall at FAME studio after an Aretha Franklin session ended with Aretha storming back to New York. Wexler later set up the Muscle Shoals session guys in their own studio, Muscle Shoals Sound. Furious at the betrayal, Hall went to see Atlantic’s arch-rival, Chess Records, and persuaded Leonard Chess to bring his top Soul acts to FAME. Between August and December 1967, Chess’s Etta James, recorded her greatest album, TELL MAMA, at FAME.

Etta’s career had faltered, and it took the Muscle Shoals sessions to bring her back. The LP’s title song, Tell Mama, as well as Otis Redding’s Security became Top 40 hits and Top 20 R&B hits for Etta. It was the B-side of Tell Mama that would become the LP’s enduring track, though. I’d Rather Go Blind was written by Etta’s friend, Fugi Foster, who handed it to her when she went to see him in prison. Although never a charted hit for Etta, this is the original version of a song that has been recorded hundreds of times by artists as diverse as Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, Paolo Nutini, Mick Hucknall, and the Allman Brothers.

Recognized today as one of the greatest Soul LPs of all time, TELL MAMA hasn’t been available on vinyl for more than forty years. Now it’s back, lovingly transferred and remastered, and pressed on 180g vinyl.

Schlichtweg grandios!

Diese Platte ist in jeder Hinsicht schlichtweg grandios. Zum einen musikalisch: eine der besten Platten, die in den Muscle Shoals Studios aufgenommen wurden. Deep South Soul. Und die Vinyl-Scheibe hat einen absolut klasse Sound!
