Aubrey Haynie's debut album, recorded at the ripe old age of 23, is a tour de force of bluegrass, country and western swing. The title track, Haynie's version of the Flatt & Scruggs classic “Doin' My Time”, doesn't disappoint as the young artist plays traditional tunes like “Cherokee Shuffle”, “Dark Hollow” and 'Turkey in the Straw'. The jazzy 'Cracker Jack' and the Texas swing of 'Foolin' Around' are also exceptional. Equally impressive are Haynie's own contributions to the genre, including the solemn 'Leavin' Raisin'' with Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas, 'Montgomery Bell' and the beautiful 'Austin's Dream', where Haynie accompanies his fiddle with a tenor guitar. In time, these may be the songs that the next generation of bluegrass musicians will learn, and Haynie, who is still young enough, will still be around to teach them firsthand.
