Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1929, Hawkins first made a name for himself as a good boxer – but then took up singing – or rather, screaming – he is called Screamin’ Jay for a reason. Screamin’ Jay has developed a rhythm that can be described as demoniac: 'I Put A Spell On You' and 'Hong Kong' are good examples. One should not take this likeable gentleman too serious, though; there’s doubtlessly a touch of exhibitionism about him, but behind his fiery vocals there is the force of attack and the power of an authentic champion of the boxing ring.
