Back in the 70’s, New York City had a thriving music scene, and clubs like
CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City were fertile breeding grounds for fresh talent.
One talent that stood out was Robert Gordon (1947 – 2022), whose powerful
baritone voice and unique sense of style made people sit up and take notice.
Artists like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan noticed him, and offered him
songs. And so did producer Richard Gottehrer (‘Blondie’), who ended up
doing four memorable rock & roll albums together with Gordon, with genre
classics like ‘Red Hot’, ‘The Way I Walk’, ‘Fire’ and ‘Rock Billy Boogie’.

Few doubt that Robert Gordon could have been one of the great American
singers. Instead, he became a cult hero who attracted the kind of adoration
that is usually reserved for superstars. This book tells his story through the
prism of his European tours during the last 20 years of his life. The story is
told by Arjan Deelen, who managed Gordon’s career during that timeframe.
There’s plenty of entertaining road stories, but also fascinating insights into
the man and his music, which go some way towards explaining why Gordon’s
career never reached its full potential.

Gordon himself also gets a voice in the
book, as he talks openly about his battles with drugs and alcohol, and the
crippling guilt he felt after the drug-related death of his son Anthony.
It is a compelling and ultimately tragic story. But throughout it all, one
thing that never changed was that arresting voice and Gordon’s unwavering
commitment to his music.

Both Tony Garnier and Duke Robillard worked with Gordon, and are sharing
their memories and insights for the first time in this book. Garnier has toured
and recorded with Bob Dylan for the past 37 years, while Robillard is best
known for his work with Roomful of Blues and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Also included is a detailed discography, as well as interviews with key
musicians like Anton Fig and Billy Cross.
