Er war der perfekte Mitwirkende jeder Anwerbeveranstaltung fürs Militär: der Gefreite Cecil Gant kam 1944 an einer Verkaufsveranstaltung für Kriegsanleihen vorbei und fragte, ob er mal was auf dem Klavier auf der Bühne klimpern dürfte. Gefr. Gant hatte so durchschlagenden Erfolg, dass seine musikalische Darbietung für weitere Veranstaltungen dieser Art angefordert wurde. Doch selbst sein kommandierender Offizier konnte nicht wissen, dass der Soldat schon im nächsten Jahr einen Nr.-1-R&B-Tophit landen würde.
Gant, am 4. April 1913 in Nashville geboren, konnte einen kraftvollen Boogie spielen und Bluesballaden besinnlich-gefühlvoll singen. Eines Tages ging er ins Studio von Leroy Hurte, dem Betreiber eines kleinen, unabhängigen Plattenlabels in L.A., Bronze Records, und fragte, ob er ein paar Nummern aufnehmen könnte. Eine davon war die nachdenkliche, nostalgische Ballade I Wonder, die Hurte im Sommer 1944 pressen ließ. Die Platte erregte regional genug Aufsehen, um das Interesse von Gilt-Edge Records zu erwecken, die Gant schnell ins Studio zurückholten, um eine frische Version einzuspielen. Diese kam Anfang 1945 an die Spitze der R&B-Charts und erreichte sogar einen bemerkenswerten 20. Platz in der Pop-Hitparade, wobei Gilt-Edge Gant den Beinamen 'The G.I. Sing-Sation' verpasste. Eine Coverversion von Roosevelt Sykes war ebenfalls ein Nr.-1-R&B-Hit; auch Woody Herman und Louis Armstrong spielten den Song ein.
Gant hatte in den 40er-Jahren noch mehrere Hits auf Gilt-Edge, Bullet und 4 Star, von denen jedoch keiner ein solch erdrutschartiger Erfolg wie I Wonder war (sein letzter, I'm A Good Man But A Poor Man, wurde so etwas wie ein Blues-Standard). Nachdem er aus der Armee entlassen wurde, nahm Gant weitere 78er für King, Dot, Swing Time und Imperial auf, bevor er 1950 zu Decca kam. Seine erste Session für die große Plattenfirma wurde unter dem Pseudonym Gunter Lee Carr veröffentlicht; doch bei Rock Little Baby, aufgenommen am 19. Januar 1951 in New York mit einer Combo, zu der ein Leadgitarrist mit messerscharfem Sound gehörte, stand wieder Cecils richtiger Name.
Nur eine weitere Aufnahmesitzung für Decca später im selben Jahr blieb Gant noch. Er war ein Trinker, der auch im Studio den ein oder anderen Schluck nahm, um lockerer zu werden, und dann neues Material vor Ort improvisierte. Der Pianist starb Anfang 1952 unerwartet im Alter von nur 38 Jahren.
