Nathan Evans Fox: Heirloom (CD)
Raised on land that has been in his family for four generations, at the end of a cul-de-sac in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, Fox grew up in a community marked by factory closures, redundancies and the slow erosion of working-class stability. His sound carries working-class critique and community-centred hope to places that might otherwise resist them. For him, country music is about embracing his twang, working within traditions and ensuring that the most difficult conversations take place in a language that feels familiar. Fox affectionately calls it ‘Comrade Country’.
Sonically, ‘Heirloom’ is brimming with the texture and spirit of the Appalachians. The banjo weaves its way through the entire album in inventive ways – played with a bow, muted and used percussively – serving less as a symbol of tradition and more as a means of storytelling. With his work, Fox creates something that goes beyond a mere catalogue of songs. He creates space for listeners who do not want to have to choose between their cultural roots and their hopes for a fairer world. His music invites people to engage in difficult conversations without losing any of its playfulness or warmth: protest anthems that sound like porch songs, liberation theology wrapped in banjo strings, and country music that remembers where it comes from whilst imagining where it might go.
Nathan Evans Fox, an indie-country artist originally from North Carolina and now based in Nashville, writes songs that explore the tensions between family, faith, work and legacy. This is particularly striking on his forthcoming album *Heirloom*. Fox affectionately calls it ‘Comrade Country’. Sonically, *Heirloom* is brimming with the texture and spirit of the Appalachians. The banjo features imaginatively throughout the album – it is
bowed, muted and used percussively – serving not so much as a symbol of tradition, but rather as a means of storytelling.
