"The Fairport Convention"

Gegründet 1966 in London Die Gruppe wurde von einer Reihe Folkmusiker aufgebaut, die aus den Bands „Ethnic Shuffle 0rchestra' und „Tim Turner's Narration' kamen. Wohl keine andere britische Gruppe hat in ihrer Geschichte so viele Besetzungsänderungen mitgemacht wie Fairport Convention, aus keiner anderen Gruppe wahrscheinlich gingen auch so viele Ableger-Bands hervor. So gründete Pianistin und Sängerin Judy Dyble die Gruppe „Trader Horne', Sandy Denny formierte mit anderen Musikern 1969 die Gruppe „Fortheringay', Sänger lan Matthews baute seine „Matthews Southern Comfort' auf, und Bassist Ashley Hutchings startete schließlich 1970 die Gruppe „Steeleye Span'. Trotz dieser laufenden Umbesetzungen änderte Fairport Convention ihren Stil bis heute kaum. Ihr Folksound, ob bei altenglischen Liedern oder neukomponiertem Material, klang stets fröhlich und frisch. Die heutige Besetzung der Gruppe besteht aus Trevor Lucas (g), Dave Swarbrick (vi), Dave Pegg (b), Jerry Donahue (g) und Sandy Denny (voc, p). 1974 veröffentlichte die Gruppe als ihr zehntes Album einen Live-Mitschnitt „Live Convention'. Mit dieser Produktion hatte die Band vor allem in den USA und in Australien einen solchen Erfolg, daß die Musiker im Frühjahr 1975 mit ihrer bislang letzten Langspielplatte, „Rising For The Moon', im Gepäck eine 3-Monate-Tournee durch Australien, die USA und New Zealand absolvierten.
